5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging but utterly inspirational! 6 Dec 2010
By V. Kyte
We've recently returned from Spain having followed the first 7 days of the Andalucian Coast to Coast Walk. I decided to try the walk because for many years we have used the author's other walking guide, Walking in Andalucía, which we have found to be an invaluable tool. GHW has stuck to the same format as in the other book, but this time he describes a route that he himself researched which runs from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. We have now completed the first week of the walk: this section takes you inland from Maro and across the Sierra de Almijara. We found the route notes to be up-to-date and had no problems following them - and we also had downlaoded the GPS to our Garmin handheld, although we could easily have managed without this. The book also includes check list for bird and plants which was a nice bonus, as well as a description/history of each of the 21 villages with hotel and restaurant listings. We particularly enjoyed the first and fifth day of this section (the section around the base of the Maroma as you head for Alcaucín was simply amazing). We were glad that on all days you cover a good distance - on average 22/23 kilometers - and are already looking forward to the next week of walking, which we hope to tackle this coming autumn. We were surprised that there wasn't more waymarking on the paths but gather that the whole route may soon be signposted by the regional govenment in Andalucía. But even without consistent waymarking, it was easy to find our way with the notes and the recommended maps (we found the recommended map shop in Málaga, Mapas y Compañia, to be excellent, where we were able to pick up all the necessary maps as well as other walking guides).

I can thoroughly recommend Guy Hunter-Watt's first class reference work for walkers along Andalucía's Mediterranean coast. I have lived in Andalucía for many years and finding reliable sources of information and accurate route notes is almost impossible. This work will surely become the definitive guide book for walkers. Some of the routes I knew from previous walks so I was pleasantly surprised to discover entertaining anecdotes and bits of history that I hadn't known to make the walks that much more interesting. Congratulations to Mr. Hunter-Watts on his efforts. I look forward to further instalments!

5.0 out of 5 stars Andalucian Coast to Coast Walk 4 July 2011
Having completed 5 walks with Guy Hunter Watts, including 3 days of the Coast-to-Coast Walk, in the last 3 months, I can honestly say that you will not find a better informed, more amenable, knowledgeable guide than Guy. It's a pure pleasure to spend 15-20Km walking with him, hearing about local history, fauna and flora and discovering new walks.

This book is a very well written and annotated, easy-to-follow, guide to some fantastic walks in the sierras of Malaga and Cadiz behind the Costa del Sol. The views both ways - to mountain and sea, are often stunning and the sheer variety of scenery and countryside is more than many people would expect from this part of the world.

This book is suitable for day walkers or keen walkers alike and will open your eyes to the joys of walking in Andalucia. If you get the chance to walk with Guy then that is an added bonus!

5.0 out of 5 stars Part of the coast to coast walk 3 July 2011
I have now completed three days of the walks from this book and am mightily impressed. The walking descriptions and instructions are very clear. The details and recommentations of where to stay and where to eat are well researched, we were very comfortable and well fed after each days walking. The walks were well timed and with plenty of water quite do-able. Certainly long enought to feel that a cold beer was well deserved at the end of the day. And of course the landscape and scenery of the Abdalgis mountains is beautiful and the birdlife plentiful. Very well laid out, to be recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding guide 9 May 2012

This is a truly excellent book. It makes walking in Andalucia particularly enjoyable. No need to worry about getting lost because the directions are so very clear; good recommendations on accommodation/food and interesting insights into the history along the way. The scenery was amazing.

I would recommend this book strongly. I am not a seasoned walker but the daily distances were easily managable. For me, the book probably resulted in the best holiday I have ever had.
