Book Description

Aug 2007 Odyssey Maps
Made famous in the West by the Venetian adventurer, Marco Polo, the ancient Silk Road spanned one-quarter of the circumference of the Earth. An intricate network of trading routes, in its heyday it stretched from Lyoyang and Xi'an in China, through Central Asia to Istanbul and Rome, perhaps the first example of the globalisation of trade. Untold perils, both natural and man-made, awaited the hardy merchants and travellers who ventured along the Silk Road's many branches in search of profit, learning or simply adventure. Conquering armies, too, swept back and forth throughout the centuries of the Road's existence. All have left their mark in some way. Inside are four detailed maps of the Silk Road's arteries supplemented by 35 colour photographs and historical notes on key places and notable people.

2.0 out of 5 stars a limited Silk Road 1 Feb 2009
Format:Map
This map shows a variety of silk roads but is short on topographical detail. Mountains, rivers and deserts played a huge part in the formation of the silk roads - as did the mineral products of the areas and the geology - so it was disappointing to see nothing of these on the maps. A description of the major archeological finds and Museums along the roads, as a side column would also be helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars a misunderstanding 12 Oct 2008
Format:Map
Hi
I have made a mistake with a written review of the
book The Silk Road by Jonathan Tucker , I left the review
on the wrong book, namely this one, a map book showing the ancient silk road network, I had not read at the time . If you look at the front cover you will see no accredited author
so wrongley I thought a mistake had been made by Amazon,
who supposedly vet the reviews for errors.I do apologize to one and all.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting trip. 23 Sep 2009

A fine attempt at covering this vast subject. The ancient facts seem correct but unfortunately, it is woefully out of date in recent history and one must keep that in mind when watching.
