I was looking forward to reading this book, but when I finished it, I was a little disappointed. Although it is beautifully written, the main feeling I had was that every character and every aspect of the book was so untouched upon. Whilst the author makes many a metaphor of his twin Colombuses and their discoveries, the actual discovery of the amor veneris and Mateo's subsequent experimentation with local women (whores and corpses) seems to been only alluded to. Mateo's obbession with the courtesan, again though explained, is not felt by the reader. In fact, that is the impression I would have of the whole thing. It is a good story but it seems almost hurried in parts (Ines life after the discovery). Still it IS worth reading though at the end you may feel as you still don't really know anything. I feel the author could have made so much more of this.
