Product Description

Product Description

Few individuals have shaped their country's civilization more profoundly than the Master Kong (Confucius, 551-479 BC). Compulsory reading in the late Imperial period for all who wished to enter the Civil Service or Government, his sayings and those of his disciples form the foundation of a distinct social, ethical, and intellectual system. They have retained their freshness and vigour throughout the two and a half millennia of their currency, and are still admired even in today's China. This lively new translation with clear explanatory notes by one of the foremost scholars of classical Chinese provides the ideal introduction to the Analects for readers who have no previous knowledge of the Chinese language and philosophical traditions.

An excellent short book on the attributed sayings of Confucius (551-479B.C.) but none the less absorbing for reading and studying, giving thought provocation to the readers.Helped by an understandable introduction and a lucid note section. The book is an insight to the ancient Chinese way of thinking and plilosophy giving many parallels in todays society for the readers to make their own interpretations. A help for quiet reflection in the troubled times of today.

Condescension 12 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
I didn't like this book. I bought it because I wanted to read what Confucius had written, and I expected that a classics title would provide me with a good usable translation. The introduction is condescending in the extreme; the translator seems to want to undermine the sayings that will be presented. It's as though some pedantic academic feels he has more to say about the world, than the philosopher who had been admired for thousands of years. The introduction was petty.

The change of name from Confucius to Master Kong is absolutely numbing. It makes the text more difficult to approach and is illogical.

The choice of words, though explained at length didn't make sense. There are better translations available free on the web.

I think that for someone wishing to approach the ideas from the start this is not a good choice. Maybe it might work as a literal translation for some academic who already knows the text from other sources.

I really can't recommend it.
