5.0 out of 5 stars Terrifyingly addictive 29 Nov 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Having watched the original film and the remake that came out this year, I had to get my hands on a copy of this book. Not only had the films wetted my appetite to know more about the events in Amityville, but I wanted to know the real story - and boy am I glad that I went through the trouble to track this book down. Right from the very first page, Anson throws the reader into the thick of things, and within the first couple of chapters the terror that the family experience makes the flesh crawl. What makes this even more impressive is that Anson lets the reader use their imagination a bit, which is more than can be said for most horror writers.
Just when you think that it's not going to get any more scary, and your just starting to think that it won't scare you, BAM! Anson throws in that horrible white figure (trust me, I was scared of that thing!).
So, the bottom line - whether you think this is a true story or not (personally I believe most of what's written here, even if some of it does appear to be a creative liberty) this book is extremely addictive and easily one of the most frightening ever written. You won't realise how much it's scared you until you have finished reading, which won't take very long, since this sure is hard to put down. Don't go thinking that just because the film wasn't scary that this won't be. There are tons of memorably scary moments (most notably the white figure and 'Jodie' the pig friend). Give it a try if you can get hold of a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive 8 Feb 2003
By Helen
Format:Paperback
The case of The Amityville Horror has indeed stood the test of time in terms opf real life occult stories. Anyone who has even a fleeting interest in the occult or stories of hauntings and the supernatural will love this book and become instantly addicted to the story which is by far superior to the subsequently made film. Jay Anson dispenses with hyperbole and dramatics to present the barest facs of the true story case. The story is gripping from the very first page and you may find, as I did, that it becomes a necessity perchace other two fictional books written on the story by John G. Jones who, although not quite as exiting to read as the origional Anson offering but still highy addictive and fascinating. There has been so much written on this real-life story of a well documented haunting and this book is an ideal place to start to wet the appetite. A thoroughy superb read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling 4 July 2004
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
What makes this book more frightening is that this actually happened, 28 days at 112 Ocean Avenue and the family fled and with good reason. The horrors witnessed by this family and spine tingling; the green slime, the figure robed in white, 'Jodie' the pig. Although the book has probably been dramatized slightly the truth is there and this makes addictive reading. You can't imagine how terrified the family must have been and how horrific it was for the priest desperate the help them as the evil struck him with illness and stigmata. Then there are the strange similarities, George Lutz beginning the look like the murderer who lived there before, his family sleeping in the positions the dead lay in. But although what evil lurked there hated them did it want them to leave or not? Every page has something more stunning to keep you reading. I recommend this book very highly to those interested in the horrors at Amityville or just want a spine tingling read. You won't regret it, amazing story.

this book is awesome, the scariest book ever written. if you like the original film this is spot on, the remake movie tells hardly any of the true story, this is the best book i have ever read. a hundred times scarier than any of the movies. i would recomend this book to any horror fan, it will blow your mind

I saw the film and fancied reading the book. It's short and written well, it's very spooky, so don't read it in bed, you'll have nightmares
