About the Author

Playwright Philip Ridley was born in the East End of London, where he still lives and works. He is a contemporary artist, poet, novelist, film-maker and one of the country's most celebrated living playwrights, winning Time Out and Critics Circle awards for his plays; and he is the only person ever to have won the Evening Standard Award for both Most Promising Newcomer to British Film and Most Promising playwright. His play The Fastest Clock In The Universe has just been revived by the Hampstead Theatre and Leicester Curve as part of the Hampstead's 50 year celebrations, and his new film Heartless, starring Timothy Spall and Luke Treadaway, is due for release in February 2010. Ridley has been described as 'probably a genius' (Time Out), 'a visionary' (Rolling Stone), 'the master of modern myth' (Guardian) and 'the best British playwright of the last 20 years' (Aleks Sierz, author of In-Yer-Face Theatre).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Maxine Clarke VINE VOICE on 6 July 2005

The book starts out with the script of a radio interview with the author of the scripts, Philip Ridley. It is a fascinating autobiography of someone way (and I mean way) outside the system right from the start. Ridley then descibes how he translated his own particular brand of artistic rebellion into the two original and allegorical screenplays that follow.
The Passion of Darkly Noon is a mix of fairy tale, biblical allegory and horror movie (not much horror in it though, mainly suspense). It is a "dream" in the sense that it is not really "in" America (was filmed in Europe apparently), but is "an interpretation of" it. A clear, spare script.
To my mind it is an achievement to have not only written these scripts but to have actually made the movies.
(This is the same Philip Ridley who is a well-known children's book author and playwright. I don't think he has made any other films apart from these two though....maybe one day!)
