Product Description

Product Description

One of the most evocative eras in the history of American motorsport was the golden age of dirt-track racing, when hairy-knuckled drivers duked it out in open-wheel racers on half-mile ovals around the country. This photographic history spans the classic era from 1946 to 1970, featuring vintage photography of the Champ and Sprint cars that were driven by men like A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Roger Ward and Bobby Unser for very little monetary reward. The technologies of the most successful and unusual cars are discussed as are specific races, circuits and some of the more colorful personalities of the period. Midget and track roadsters are also featured, along with period color photography.

nowledge and passion 23 Jan 2005
Format:Hardcover
If you have read any of Joe scalzo's magazine article's or books befor then you will be familiar with his briliant and unique writing style, it borders on poetry ! it draws you into the book from the first page, you can see the dirt fly hear the offy's cracking and smell the raw fuel !. Scalzoe has been deeply involved in american motorracing for decades and knows his stuff but he presents it without numbers and statistics, no tip toeing about but ruff and in your face, almost "this is how it was...deal with it" you almost have to read it in a texan acent at grand national pace!!! you just have to love the passion and fine writing style. The book itself is well produced with many bright and crisp colour photos and plenty of black and white of equal quality, showing the ruff and tumble of dirt racing, it was a crazy game in them midgets

Dirt Track Heroes 28 Mar 2012
By Terry J
Format:Hardcover
This is a superb book and Joe Scalzo is a superb writer . Read this book . If you did not grow up in the era Joe describes or you did not grow up in the United States you are in for a special treat . You are going to discover a whole host of heroes you never had before . I was born in 1950's Britain and never experienced the delight of seeing sprintcars and champcars being 'danced' on dirt ,but thanks to this book I feel like I did . I have a new hero , Jud Larson . Joe brings him alive ,a sadly departed , larger than life , character it is hard to resist .

This book is wonderful from cover to cover . Joe writes in his own unique style but you soon get to love his no nonsense ways. The photographs in this book are wonderful . You will be blown away by the functional beauty of Offy-powered champcars.

A great, great, book - worthy of a place on any bookshelf.

Dirt track passion 12 April 2002
By Rand Thompson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Joe Scalzo has a lot of passion for the drivers and cars of American championship dirt racing which is obvious when you open the book. The photos in the book are outstanding even though I have seen some of them before. A lot of good color photos when black and white was much more common for the times. Pretty similar to the Indy roadster book, so if you liked that one I can easily recommend this one. This book brought me back to the golden era of dirt tracks with such legends as Troy Ruttman, Jimmy Bryan,Jud Larson,AJ Foyt,Tony Bettenhausen, Unser's, and all the other greats.

Dirt and Speed 21 Aug 2007
By Nash Black - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Four wheels, body and engine--driver and machine in synchronization with power. The stands were small, the wind stifling and filled with clods which disengrated into dust as the afternoon wore on--the world of dirt track racing at its best. The track was ready for racing when it was as hot as Mama Unser's chili.
Nash walked to his pickup from the observer's stand, and removed his sunglasses. Two white circles revealed his eyes in a face black with particles of dirt and rubber. It had been a fine afternoon with the best. For race fans who live near a small dirt track or remember when they dotted the landscape Joe Scalzo's love of racing flows through every page and photograph of "The American Dirt Track Racer." Lets go racing becomes not a phrase but a lifetime. Enjoy every page, every work of this beautiful memorial.
Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps" and "Sins of the Fathers."
