Dealing with forensic evidence that changes the view of certain myths and battles of the civil war such as the Hornets Nest.
Enthralling for those interested in strategy and tactics rather than just the overall narrative and 'a must' for weaponary information. The dramatisation is well done though concerned with details of battles and the characters involved in particular events, such as the generals and the forensic view of the locations, rather than the emphasis being on the historical and political overview alone.
Very concise and 'a must' for those interested in the people 'on the ground' and effects and process of technology used to destroy people in wars.

This is not a complete history of the American Civil War but nevertheless has many interesting new stories and re-enactments from U S Grant's symbolic gesture of doffing his hat to Robert E Lee as he left Appomattox after the surrender to a Union Prison for Confederates near Chicago which seemed to almost match the more well-known Southern Prison for Union Troops at Andersonville, Georgia.
The Civil War is often referred to as the first "modern" war in history, included armaments, ironclad ships, telegraph and railroads. The casualty list on both sides for four years of fighting was truly appalling, much of which is reflected here.
Disc Five is devoted entirely William T Sherman's epic "march to the sea", which is extremely well done and is worth the entire box-set price on its own!
Much of the material here is in standard 4:3 aspect whilst the rest is in wide-screen format. Over fourteen hours of viewing here for very little money, you just can't go wrong!
He was amazed that there was so much he had not seen before, particularly the battlefield walks, and the armament reviews ... and as he is his company's gunner, that's saying something!
The series was made by the Discovery Channel, so if you missed it (or want to see it again) do buy it, it's only a pound a disc!
Nice to be able to please a chap now and again ... and again ... and again ...!
