Product Description

The American Civil War defined the modern American nation. It was a war where brother fought brother and families were torn apart over their loyalties The generals of the Civil War Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee are legends of military history and this six hour programme details the major turning points and battles of the war. Although the majority of the 600,000 fatalities were due to disease, the war was one of the bloodiest in American history as generals struggled to adapt the old methods of waging war to the new weapons available. With the aid of historical accounts, reconstructions and expert analysis, this is one of the defining programmes on the American Civil War.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it!! 4 Jan 2009
I bought this DVD regardless of the 2 current reviews and I'm glad I did. No, it's nothing like the aforementioned Ken Burns classic - it's accounts of the battles use both re-enactments and some nice tactical maps which you can follow easily enough while the Ken Burn's one has old photos and is very difficult to follow the tactical deployments.
I love this period and this DVD did not disappoint. Go on - give it a go...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the one I thought it was... 13 May 2008
By AlG
First off, this is NOT the beautifull, touching and masterfull documentary series of the same name that is shown on the BBC every christmas.Instead its a so-so documentary which I found very informative but at the same time very long winded and quite dull in some respects. There seemed to be too much focus on battle re-enactments,which,granted might be exciting for people who are into that sort of thing, but after watching about three such battles I was tempted to switch the TV off!

2.0 out of 5 stars It's not good 24 Sep 2013
By ChrisR
How this series of documentaries won awards is beyond me. I could only bear to watch 40 minutes of it and I had to turn it off I was so bored. It doesn't draw you into the war at all, it just chugs along from one battle to the next with the narrators voice droaning in the background to a bunch of re-enactors who look more like they're out on a Sunday stroll rather than fighting for their lives in a real battle, where's the passion? Where's the fear and the emotion?. I was expecting so much more, some pictures of the actual time period, accounts of people who were there, but all you get is a description of every battle like "this regiment went here, and that regiment went there, and then they opened fire on each other" and it's just so boring! Add to that the appalling picture and sound quality, it looks and sounds like something that was recorded on a VHS video and then left on the shelf for the last 30 years growing mould! If you're looking for a good documentary about the ACW, then do yourselves a favour and avoid this one!

1.0 out of 5 stars Even worse second time around....very much so 24 April 2008
First of all I most strongly protest at the censorship that is being perpetrated by this site. Why do you appeal to customers to give their honest appraisals of books, CDs and DVDs and then not publish the review they submit? Or is it that you only want 5-star reviews? Yes indeed, I did use some expletives in describing this product, but it was only very mild and would not even have upset the late Mary Whitehouse OBE!

So I'll post my review again, in the hope that you at the Thought Police Department will be gracious enough to publish it. Most reluctantly I kow-towed to your prudish sense of propriety and omitted the use of the terms "bl**dy" and "*ff*ng" (I used those terms in this same sanitised form, by the way, so no one would be too much shocked, but apparently, some people still were, honestly, I ask you....).

Anyway, on to the review.

I ordered this set of 3 DVDs on the assumption that it was the marvellous documentary series on the American Civil War made by Ken and Ric Burns for the American PBS network. Many of you may know of it or even have seen it: it hs been broadcast 3 times now on the BBC.

This DVD series on the Civil War which I'm reviewing wasn't the Burns one. That was quite a disappointment when it arrived in the mail.
A disappointment which grew even worse when I popped the discs in the DVD player, and watched about one hour of each one.

Unbelievable. In a way you have to give the makers some "credit": it is quite a feat to present such an interesting subject in such a thoroughly boring and annoying way!
It was even worse when I gave it another try after 2 days waiting, thinking it would grow on me. It didn't though. Again: what a huge disappointment!

What's wrong with it?
