By Amelrode TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The history of art has produced few works as ambitious and as valuable as the Amber Room. Famous throughout Europe as `the eighth wonder of the world', its vast and intricately worked amber panels were a gift of the king of Prussia to the Russian Emperor. For over two hundred years the room remained in its Russian palace, but with the outbreak of the Second World War, Hitler laid claim to it as a showpiece for the Third Reich. When the Nazis swept into Leningrad, it was wrenched from the walls, packed into crates and disappeared from view, never to be seen again. The mystery of what is generally considered to be the greatest of the missing treasures of Europe is the background fro this intriguing and gripping crime story.

Steven Berry - this is my 4th novel by him - has created with this work a fast running, intriguing, gripping mystery. It is splendid merger of fact and fiction creating an engrossing puzzler. I cut not put it down and finished it in 2 days. The only draw-back I could find: Berry should check the German phrases maybe with native speaker. But that does not pull the book down.

So if you want to find out why Steven Berry is a mega-seller: well, just read this book. Highly recommended!!! I am really looking forward to Steven Berry's next (5th) book.

My husband gave me this to read on holiday as I'd ran out of reading material. It's clearly targeted at a male audience purely from the sexual descriptions but once I'd got past that this book was good to read.

I found bits a little tiresome as there was too much description in places rather than relying on the excellent plot and good characters. I can see why he is such a popular author and would possibly read his work again in the future. I was surprised at how quickly Rachel and Paul abandoned their children to go in search of the Amber Room in Germany to be honest but then I guess it is only fiction!

It is fast paced from the start and the Amber Room was portrayed brilliantly through some effective narrative. The plot surrounds Rachel and her ex-husband Paul. Rachel's father dies suspiciously and leaves behind a series of clues to a treasure called the Amber Room. Desperate to find out the truth she heads for Germany with her ex hot on her heels. They meet professional killers and devious art collectors on the adventure of their life.

A bit too neatly tied up at the end but still worth a read.

over all a good story and a decent read. But some parts I found very hit and miss. For the majority of the book you find your self constantly turning pages but it does have it's sluggish moments, but as i have said overall the book is a decent read

Suddely, as rare things will, it vanished.
The Amber Room was a treasure looted by the Nazis and lost during the end of WW2. Worth an on-line search to understand the background, it's quite interesting. Read more
