4.0 out of 5 stars Classic: Volume 2 2 Jan 2013
By Paul McNamee TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Well, it took them five years, but in summer 2012 Marvel finally released a follow-up volume to their original Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus which collected, in entirety, the run of comics written by Stan Lee and co-plotted and illustrated by Steve Ditko. This second volume collects the beginning of John Romita's tenure as penciller and co-plotter with issues from 1966 through 1968, as well as a few other related goodies and is, as always, an essential purchase for the Spider-Man fan in your life (specifically if that Spider-fan is you!).

First things first - this is not quite a five star book. OK, fair enough, presentation-wise, with its gleaming-white pages, spotless colour reconstruction, sturdy-yet-flexible binding and handsome covering, yes, it's five-star. As in definition-worthy five-star. Content wise, I'm very tempted to think towards the latter two thirds of the book, by which stage I was thoroughly engrossed in the general soap operatics of Spider-Man's life, but I can't hide from you the fact that after this book's opening salvo (the classic issues #39-40, in which Spidey and the Green Goblin arrive at a mutual unmasking) there's a couple of star-docking issues starring the Rhino, Jonah Jameson's son and the Lizard which are simply sub-par material. There's little you can do with Rhino and the Lizard is just plain goofy (note: this is decades before he, erm, ate his son...), so these issues were a chore to get through. After that, though, it's allll good stuff, from tussles with a pair of Vultures, an indispensable Doctor Octopus saga and classic explorations of morality in "Spider-Man No More" and the exercise in sheer tension that is "The Goblin Lives".

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelsior 6 Jun 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have waited over 6 years for this Omnibus and finally it arrives and Impressed does not cover half of it

Just like Omnibus number 1 the reproduction of the covers and artwork in general is top notch. If you ever saw the colour printing in issues 41,42,43 you will be overjoyed with this Omnibus as the colours are not washed out or miss-aligned.

There is a nice forward and writeup from Stan And Jon which add an insight into that period. Personally I thought the story arcs during Romita's period were excellent and I wont draw breath really in comparing to Ditco's era as who needs another flame war LOL

The Marvel Tales alternate covers add some joy to yhe package but no-where near as much as the un-released pencil art by Larry Leiber who I thought drew as close to Romita as you could get.

A brilliant package and at this price its a steal for Spidey Fans like myself - However - Marvel please dont let us wait 6-7 years for the next edition, and how about a DareDevil version or some more FF and Hulk (Hulk must be overdue surely)

5.0 out of 5 stars As Good As The First! 30 April 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Finally marvel has releashed a second spider-man omnibus and its another great additon to my collection. This "Volume" collects the start of, in my opinion, one of the best spidey artists out there, John Romita. The Reproduction is really well done and the book opens flat most of the time. It is slighly smalller then the first volume but it stil is worth £48.00 in my opinion. It opens with a great story about the green goblin and ends with Spider-man Annual 5. iTS great release but seriously Marvel, Five years between them! I really hope the next volume comes out before 2017 or it will take ages to get a complete set.

Delivery was excellent and really quik, and this book is a great read even for a non-spidey fan as it shows just how great the web head was and still is.
