Spider-Man is back!

In 2012, 'The Amazing Spider-Man' became an `amazing' success. Everybody warmed to this new version of Spider-Man; and Andrew Garfield put his own take on the wall-crawler and the character of Peter Parker. Even though it wasn't Tobey Maguire anymore, it was still recognisably Spider-Man. It was an inevitable that a sequel would come after the success of `The Amazing Spider-Man' and how right I was.

`The Amazing Spider-Man 2' was released in 2014. The film stars Andrew Garfield returning to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man along with Emma Stone as Gwen and Sally Field as Aunt May. It also stars Jamie Foxx as Electro/Max Dillon and Dane DeHann as Harry Osborn/The Green Goblin.

I enjoyed watching this second film ofthe Andrew Garfield era. I remember going to see it with my best mate from school at the cinemas. We knew we'd enjoy and have a good ride with this film. I watched it again afterwards I went with my parents to see it in the cinema. Although I enjoyed this film, I wouldn't claim it to be the best Spidey film as I have reservations and a mixture of the good and the bad from it and feel that things could have been better.

Again like the first film, `The Amazing Spider-Man 2' derives from the modern day comics of `Spider-Man'. There were lots of changes made to certain characters which I noticed being a Spider-Man fan. The story seemed to take an artistic license and it became more about OsCorp and the mysteries surrounding it and also about Peter discovering more about his family history rather than focusing on his ordinary life as Peter. Also there were too many villains as was the case with `Spider-Man 3'.

As I write this review The Amazing Spider-Man 2 only has a 53% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes…. Really?! What’s wrong with you people?! Granted this is not in the same league as the very best superhero flicks, but it’s damn good fun with outstanding performances and astonishing set-pieces punctuated by moments of high drama and nicely-judged humour.

One of the big criticisms seems to be the “overabundance of characters”, but I don’t agree with this at all. This isn’t like Raimi’s hugely disappointing Spider-Man 3 which was overstuffed with villains all competing for screen time. Instead the main villain throughout most of this film is Electro, while separately we get the genesis story for Harry Osborn who only becomes the Goblin at the very end. Meanwhile the film’s third villain, Rhino, only appears in fun sequences at the beginning and end of the film and doesn’t feature in the main narrative at all. I accept that having the Goblin attack the very minute Electro is defeated is somewhat hard-to-swallow, but otherwise the bad guys have their own distinct arcs and it never feels like a “let’s-team-up-to-bash-Spidey” exercise.

Having said that, I can quite understand that comic book purists might take great exception to the dramatic re-imagining of the villains, especially Electro and Rhino. Of course nobody would have expected Marc Webb to give us an Electro in green and yellow spandex with lightning bolts on his head, but changing the character beyond recognition was maybe not the best move. I have less of a problem with Rhino – a guy in a Rhino suit would have looked ridiculous, so putting him in powered armour makes sense, though I’m not completely enamoured with the design.

If i was to sum up The amazing Spider-man 2 in one word that word would be 'Too much', The story suffers from lack of narrative and focus on a specific storyline, You've got Gwen & Peter's relationship, Harry and his story (trying to be as spoiler free as possible), Electro and his story, You've got Peter trying to find out about his parents past and their story! and if that's not enough you've got peter and him having visions of gwen's father, and they have RHYNO shoed in as well!, It's all too much they would of been much better off focusing on one or two of the story elements here (Me personally i would go for Gwen & Peter's relationship & Electro) The problem is they tried to make each of the story aspects as big as each other, None sat in the background whilst one or two took centre stage! That being said does this make The amazing spider-man 2 a bad movie? No, The movie isn't bad at all, It just could've been a lot better, The special effects are top notch, The action is quick, powerful and intense, and one of the scene's towards the end of the movie sticks in your head (Mine at least) for a long time, Seriously it's been nearly 24 hours and i still can't stop thinking about it, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are both superb! Their chemistry on screen is fantastic and actually made me enjoy their romance a lot more! (Due in no doubt to their off screen romance, Andrew Garfield is one lucky guy! He gets to be Spiderman and date Emma Stone, Jealous much) Overall i enjoyed the film if so it didn't quite live up to my expectations, That being said i still want The Amazing spider-man 3!Read more ›
