3.0 out of 5 stars Promising title, a rather boring story 16 Nov 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
After having read the "18 hours" I desperately wanted to learn more about the Australian SAS. "The Amazing SAS" seemed to be the one - especially that it focuses on modern times.

I must say that I fell asleep over this book only too many times. The first 140 pages (out of 340) could have been about 20 with no loss to its content. The action and more interesting facts and observations start with the Afghanistan chapter. But again it gets boring after some time.

All in all - you can skip the first 140 pages with no loss to history or action. Then you can probe the rest of it looking for some interesting paragraphs.

I am sure the author has done a great job in researching the facts, the events, talking to the soldiers etc. But the final efect is not gripping at all. It is rather boring. I cannot recommend this book.

3 stars - for some new facts and interesting observations. But this is as far as I can go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed history well worth the read. 12 Jan 2007
By TE
Format:Paperback
I liked this book. Although (as the previous reviewer stated) it gets a bit boring in places, overall it was an excellent and detailed account of the most recent and important ASAS operations. It includes a lot of "behind the scenes" information not normally included in a book. As a former member of a US unit attached to the ASAS, I thought the inclusion of STS personnel comments and insight particularly interesting and I commend the author for his keen insight and research.

A very well written book with all the details.

5.0 out of 5 stars The latest book on the Australian SAS (Special Air Service) 23 Feb 2009
By Kiwi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The Australian SAS are among the world's most respected special forces units, a crack team of men from the Australian Defence Force who can be relied upon to handle the most difficult, strategically sensitive and dangerous of military tasks. "The Amazing SAS" provides an insight into the way Australia's SAS soldiers are selected and trained, and runs through recent Australian SAS deployments: East Timor, Afghanistan, and Iraq. The Amazing SAS draws on interviews with General Peter Cosgrove, Prime Minister John Howard, Chief of Army Lieutenant General Peter Leahy, former SAS commanding officers Gus Gilmore and Tim McOwan, and many SAS soldiers and officers.

All in all, not a bad book and a very good up to date account of the Australian SAS.

5.0 out of 5 stars a terrific read! 29 Nov 2007
By Ms. L. Denham - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book gives a great insight into the training and deployment of the Australian SAS without giving away any strategic secrets. As the first book of its kind about these truly amazing guys, it really does give the unique flavour of our men, as well as an overview of the liaisons and negotiations that have had to be undertaken in order for these unique soldiers to be deployed. Their broad technical/military/people skills, along with their incredibly personally overseen personal training within the unit (the trainers know these soldiers inside and out!, have created a unique soldier that is in demand world wide.
Whilst this is an overview, and doesn't infringe on the privacy or work of any individual within the unit, it does at last give an enduring taste of these amazing soldiers and the lives that they lead. I tip my hat to them - one and all!
