About the Author

James B Johnson, M.D., an instructor in plastic surgery in the U.S., retired after more than twenty years in private practice to pursue his long-time interest in alternate-day calorie restriction. 5.0 out of 5 stars It worked for me like no other diet 22 May 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Although the book makes a lot of the science, it is useful advice. In some ways you can cut to the chase quickly as the diet is really simple. It is not widely known as, except for selling the book, there is no money to be made commercially. I have been on it for about 7 weeks and have lost about 20lbs. It has been easy too. You do not need to calorie count as such and can eat what you want, as normal, every other day. I ignored the advice to take to slimfast type shakes on the "down" days as the boredom, for me, would set in fast. I have a piece of fruit, a no fat 70 calorie yoghurt for breakfast, a piece of fruit for lunch and a small salad for dinner (lettuce, tomato, oily fish). Is it boring? Yes, it would be like all diets except that you are sustained by tomorrow it is back to normal eating. To suit what I was doing one week, I tried a "down day" two days running. it was fine, no great hunger panes. It is a diet you can switch on and off with ease without feeling you need to abandon it or losing the willpower. The book makes a lot of the science of switching on the starvation gene but while I cannot counter this, at its simplest it is about eating less and if you stick to it, 2 or 3 low calorie days in a week over the week say 25-35% calories overall less for the week. Its joy is it is doable for the long term. You look forward to tomorrow (the normal eating day) and the food then tastes great. It can be a little hard getting through the day, especially if other family members are eating tempting things, but you console yourself with "it is only for today" .On the normal day I do not have the urge to overeat but if I fancy a bowl of ice cream I have it (but not for the sake of it).

I recommend the book which gives you the belief in the science, even though it is so easy to grasp, but do recommend trying the diet

5.0 out of 5 stars Alternate Day Diet 16 Feb 2010
By Ria B
Format:Paperback
This book and the diet are absolutely fantastic! I have been on this diet for about 6 weeks and I have already lost 1 stone in weight. I have about another stone to go. It is so easy to keep on this diet. Ok, the first few down days might be a little bit tough, but it keeps you going knowing that it's just one day and the next day you don't have to worry too much! I am so glad I found this book, it has changed my life. After being on it for 6 weeks I really do feel that this is something I can continue with forever, and believe me, I think I've tried all the diets out there and failed miserably with them all. Give this one a go - it's brilliant!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great diet! 31 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
I've been on this diet now for 3 weeks (due to weigh again tomorrow) but I lost 5lbs in the first 2 weeks and I'm confident I've lost more, and virtually effortlessly! The book is very thorough if a little long winded on the science behind it, but I highly recommend it. Great service too, delivered quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars ADD review 7 Sep 2010
By Lena
Format:Paperback
Started ADD three weeks ago, want to lose 15kg, I am not a person of exercise and my life style is sedentary ( desk job, evening TV, walk in a park is a maximum ).
First few "down days" felt a bit shaky, in the second week of diet had weird headaches however that passed and I started feeling surprisingly more alert and energetic during fasting days. As I am not a great fan of replacement drinks, on my "down days" right from the start was eating ordinary food worth up to 500 calories, some days have less than 300, depending on how I feel. Followed my instincts and ate the food I craved obviously in minuscule quantities.
Interestingly my food preferences changed and on an "up day" I have hunger for mainly proteins and veggies; seem to be eating much less of pasta, bread and rice. I eat with no restrictions or second thoughts on my "up days" yet noticing that my ordinary caloric consumption on those days is considerably less than it would be prior dieting. Feel no side effects and my periodic migraines vanished, touch wood, so I must be doing something right. Found that the diet much easier to follow than Atkins or general calorie restriction. Diet essentially feels manageable and I am reasonably sure that would be able to keep up for prolong periods, may be even years.
One down side - alcohol consumption on "up days" may make you feel flimsy on the following "down day", no matter how small that glass of wine was. So if you are planning to go out with friends on your "up day" try to do it as early in the day as possible, have a good meal and lots of water during or afterwards. Following day have maximum allowed calories in the morning and just "man" it for the rest of the day with lots of mineral water.
Three weeks ago my weight was 72kg, today 67.5kg, my old clothes are becoming slack.
Recommend to try even if only for experience of long lost feeling of real hunger and food appreciation.

5.0 out of 5 stars The answer to all my prayers! 21 Aug 2012
By Ja55mck
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I don't normally write reviews on amazon but I just felt I had to with this. Quite frankly it's amazing, everyone needs to know about this way of life. I'm not massively over weight but over the years had slowley gained weight and wasn't happy. I've tried lads of different diets and spent hours in the gym etc. I would lose weight but as soon as I stopped it would all come back on and more.

I saw a program on horizon a couple of weeks ago which featured fasting and this type of diet. I did a bit of digging on the web and stumbled across this book. I bought it as I wanted a bit more info than the tv program gave about what to do etc. from the off I thought this sounds like a diet I could do.....forever! I love my food and frankly would rather be fat and enjoy it then be on a starvation diet all my life! This sounded perfect.

I adapted it to only doing 3 fast days a week.....monday, Wednesday and Friday. This gave me the weekends off which is a big thing for me as most of our social activity seems to involve some form of indulgence! I did this as the guy on the tv program had really good results over 5 weeks only fasting two days a week, so I figured go for 3 and increase to 4 if you need to.

I've only been on the diet a week but frankly the results already are astounding! I've lost 6.5 pounds in a week! I have never ever lost that amount on any diet/exercise program before. I once lost 5 pounds in a week but this involved heavy calorie restriction and hard exercise for at least an hour every day.

I did no exercise in the week on this diet at all! My body fat percentage also dropped 2.5 percent. I still can't quite believe it!

I didn't find it particularly hard to do the fast days.
