From the Author

Diabetes, Hepatitis, AIDS, Cancer and Alpha-Lipoic Acid
The Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) Breakthrough recounts my 22 year journey through the dangerous jungle of convential medicine. I have encountered my share of both criticism and praise for my successful use of ALA for a variety of serious diseases. The journey started when I was a young medical doctor in Cleveland. I was assigned two "terminal" liver disease patients and told that it would be a good and educative experience to watch them die. Because I had a Ph.D. in a field of Cell Biology, in addition to my MD, I could not just accept the prognosis of the Chief and I called the National Institutes of Health for advice. They advised me that in Europe that here were many published papers describing the regeneration of organs with ALA.I ordered the ALA and injected this substance into the patients and I was astounded. They quickly regenerated their damaged livers and went home feeling normal. Since that time, I have treated hundreds of people with Diabetes, patients undergoing Cancer treatment, patients with Hepatitic C, AIDS and other diseases with the same astounding results. I think the reason that this amazing substance has been ignored and has not been incorporated into conventional medical protocols is because ALA is simple, cheap and may interfere with the track to expensive surgery. Dr. Julian Whitaker wrote that "This is a remarkable book. You will learn about a healing element and the trials and tribulations endured by one of the first physicians to use it."

A historical breakthrough; medically rivetting; inspires real hope....these phrases partially describe the seminal work of Dr. Burton Berkson, in his book The Alpha Lipoic Acid Breakthrough. From the "No nonsense, tell it like it is" foreword by Julian Whitaker, M.D.; through the early days of saving the "medically dead" against the insensitive dictates of his chief doctor; to the research journey that ultimately lead to the phenomenal discovery of the efficacy of the life saving properties of this natural cellular substance, Alpha Lipoic Acid; Burt Berkson, M.D.,M.S.,Ph.D., has remarkably woven his twenty plus years of working experience with the National Institutes of Health, the Federal Drug Administration and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention into a wonderful storytelling format that truely gives hope to any potential liver transplant recipiant or patients experiencing any of a number of chronic diseases ie.,diabetes, AIDS, heart disease, cancer, macular degeneration, Alzheimer's and a host of others. Dr. Berkson has taken the seemingly arcane study of biochemistry and has given it a layman's metamorphosis into BC 101. This essential foundation aptly gives the reader a fundamental understanding of such vitally important concepts as "signal transduction" and "transcription factors"; thus giving the reader the same understanding of the machanics of the diseases mentioned as his or her physician has. Armed with this knowledge, a cancer patient (for example) can better understand why the 5 year survival rate of all cancers are between 11 - 17% and therefore may opt for an integrative medical program that will not harm the immune system, but work with it.

I sincerely hope that the mainstream media will give Dr. Berkson's book the just attention it rightfully deserves and that every medical school includes it as a primer on the effacacy of Alpha Lipoic Acid, the medicine for the new millennium.

I had previously read "The Anti-Oxidant Miracle" by a chap called Lester Packer. That was upon a recommendation by an American I met whilst on a business trip to China. The reason for telling you this was that the this American gentlemen was 67 but looked several years younger. He pointed out that he had no liver spots on his hands. Then he told me he used to before supplementing with Co-Q10 AntiOxidant. (It had taken 6 months for the "old age" liver spots caused by free-radical damage to clear up incidentally)

After reading that book I then found this book about Alpha Lipoic Acid. Given that the two authors don't reference each other (if my memory serves me correctly), both works back each other up independently. Also, this book goes into a lot more detail about what happens at cell level. For a nerd like me, I love that attention to detail as I like to understand things.

All in all, I personally recommend this book and recommend reading the other book by Lester Packer - The Anti-Oxidant Miracle. Needless to say, especially as I am 45 at time of writing and partake in heavy weight-training, I am now taking a range of supplemental anti-oxidants. This includes Vitamin E, Co-Q10, Ginkgo Biloba (for memory), Vitamin C. Plus I eat an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables. If I make it to 90, still have my marbles, and can still type at a keyboard, I'll update this review and tell you it worked!
