1.0 out of 5 stars dont watch this version of save and protect 26 Mar 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This contains the short version of 'Save and Protect', appx 120 mins as opposed to the appx 170 of the full version. this shortened version is trite as are the reviews i have seen in connection with the film. I have found the only one worth reading is on his website -'the island of sokurov'. This short version leaves out several scenes which not only make story line difficult to understand but also some scenes which are particularly indicative of Sokurov's cinematic interests.

It has turned a film of philosophy of human relationships and life/death into a weak sexual roamings of a partially demented woman. If you are looking for sex scenes forget it - bodies of the participants are much less sexual but very human, what sex there is is remote, and the spiritual contact absent as sokurov intended to portray it in his characters.

hope you can find the full version somewhere - i have seen it on youtube and am trying to locate a copy on amazon.com. The film is cinematographically excellent as is the acting of the heroine - and it makes you think

2.0 out of 5 stars Not his best. 8 Dec 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I wouldn't recommend these movies to somebody who just wants to start to know A.Sokurov. They are extremely pretentious and very boring, especialy "The Second Circle" and "Save and Protect" (even in it's significantly shortened, the new director's cut 127 min. version). The Sokurov's cinema is very uneven and quite often simply unwatchable, but still there are some good films that may be much better starters : "Mother and Son", Father and Son" and "The Sun".If you like these, they could be followed by "The Lonely Man's Voice" and "The Russian Arc".The rest, mildly putting it, are so, so.
