Product Description

Product Description

From award-winning illustrator McKean and "New York Times" bestseller Gaiman comes a lavishly illustrated look at the making of an extraordinary film. "The Alchemy of MirrorMask" takes readers inside the creative process of making "MirrorMask", a Jim Henson Company production designed and directed by McKean and written by Gaiman. It's a book that will allow the reader to visualize not only the process by which McKean created the film, but also the inspiration behind his art. The film combines animation and live action, "transferring the mysterious undercurrent and wonder of the graphic novel to the screen" ("The Hollywood Reporter"). This book includes hundreds of full-colour paintings, 3-D models, texture maps, and sketches. Also included are photos taken on the set and of places that provided inspiration for "MirrorMask." Gaiman and McKean's insightful commentary throughout sheds light on this amazing film's journey from concept to screen.

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when MIRRONMASK started, but I think it's fair to say the seed would be Jim Henson and his two personal puppet fantasies, THE DARK CRYSTAL and LABYRITH. Read the first page

By Parka HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Length: 0:25 Mins
This book contains a stunning collection of collages by Dave Mckean. Every piece of collage is showcase of creativity and fantasy. The pages are visually saturated from the cover to the last page, a feast for the eyes.

The premise of the book is on the production of the movie Mirrormask. It talks about the production of the movie exclusively. Very little is mentioned about the story, which is not a problem if you have watched the movie.

The thing with collages is, they are typically filled with great textures. This book is no different. It is through the textures of these collages that give this book so much depth.

I felt there could have been more write up on the making of the movie. But this book is essentially 5 stars for the art displayed.

Wonderful 12 Jun 2006
Format:Hardcover
The artwork in this book is fantastic. I love to see the first drawings and concept work for films, and it was a pleasure to see some of these in this book.

Not only was the book visually dynamic, but the written commentary was also a pleasure to read.

A wonderful book. If you like to see artwork behind movies I definitely suggest buying the Alchemy of Mirrormask!

if you liked the movie, then you'll surely be interested in this book which details pre-production, shooting etc. i must admit that even though i really like mckean's and gaiman's work, i didn't think the film was a masterpiece - but the book also gives a better understanding of what i think could've been but didn't happen because of budget constraints.
Mirror Mask 3 July 2009

This book turned out to be fantastic. To be honest I was looking for a book that showcased the artwork of MirrorMask and while this book did offer some of the artwork it offered so much more information about the whole movie itself including information on the artwork which was drawn by Ian Miller. It is a wealth of information on a wonderful movie. My daughter (who still sleeps in my bed) calls it our sleepy time movie and we watch it every night. I'm still not tired of it. Love the book.
