Surprisingly insightful 2 Sept. 2013
By Jodi C Ingersoll - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
What i assumed a work of fantasy fiction was instead a timeless journey of growth, endurance, and breaking free from the captivity we allow ourselves to accept as life. So glad to be wrong. I really loved this story. It stirred the youthful exuberance hiding behind a life of choices. Now i see my future colliding brilliantly with the present, thanks to a brilliantly crafted protagonist.
A little depressing 4 Nov. 2014
By Jay in Mecosta - Published on Amazon.com

I had high hopes based on the two reviews that were posted here and because of Kate Thompson's literary awards. We all have different tastes in literature, and this was not my cup of tea. First of all this novel seemed dark and dreary. There is very little warmth and sunshine until the end, and that is only a glimmer. The characters seem to fade in and out without much distinction, the evil ones are not so evil and the good ones are only fair. No hissing the villain or cheering the heroes is to be done. The main character, Jack, did not elicit any sympathy from me, even though he was orphaned, poor, and malnourished. No David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, or Tiny Tim, is our Jack. I can only attribute this to his lack of character, as he showed bravery only once, and was without compassion or thankfulness. When he does have the opportunity to rise out of his destitution his actions are abhorrent, greedy, petty and...( I stop before being a spoiler). The presentation of alchemy in the book is interesting, however it is somewhat muddy and I have my doubts whether a young reader would hang on to all the symbolism.
