Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Without a doubt, 1978's The Album is the Swedish pop demigods' finest moment. (Forgive them the film.) From the opening stanzas of the visionary "Eagle" (a "Born Free" for the late 70s) to the pure joyous rush of "Take a Chance on Me" (has a cappella ever sounded so irresistible?) to the drop-dead perfect chorus on "The Name of the Game", not a heartstring is left untouched. The melodies are matchless, the production virtually defining the era. The final three tracks, subtitled "Three Scenes from a Mini-Musical"--the celebratory and often copied "Thank You for the Music", "I Wonder", and the self-deprecating "I'm a Marionette"--merely confirmed what ABBA's fans knew all along: this was pure showtime and Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha, and Frida were masters of the form. --Everett True

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Album's closing trilogy, "The Girl with the Golden Hair: 3 Scenes From a Mini Musical", is Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus's most ambitious work yet. But despite "Thank You for the Music"--a more humble "I Write the Songs"--and the barely veiled complaint "I'm a Marionette", it wasn't the 1977 LP's best stuff. That came in two great singles: "Take a Chance on Me" and "The Name of the Game" that continued the two Abba couples' string of growing-up-in-public heartache songs. ("Knowing Me, Knowing You", from the previous Arrival, had inaugurated the tradition.) "The Girl", though, hinted that the Bjorn-and-Benny writing team was bent on storming the musical stage, as it did by the mid-80s with Chess --Rickey Wright

The songs here including Name of the Game, One Man, One Woman and Move On are timeless classics of the pop genre. The harmonies are the equal to anything else in pop,(including the Beach Boys), and the production just shimmers.

The remastered tracks reveal just how complex and layered the ABBA recording techniques really were.

A classic album.

Their fifth album shows them maturing into classic singer/song writers in their own right. There are so many hauntingly beautiful bits of pop the infectious 'Take a chance on me','I wonder','The Name of the Game' and the majestic 'eagle'. This album yielded two number one smasheroos and yet every single track is a more than credible single in its own right. My favourite track has got to be the theatrical scene from the 'Girl with the golden hair' that I'm a Marionette. There is such tension and fear in the song it just grips me so much. The harmony vocals in 'one man one woman' proved that abba are at the very top when it comes to music. Abba what can I say but thank you for the music. i

A real must 30 Jun 2001
Format:Audio CD
This is definitely one of Abba's finest hours. The first four songs are absolute classics, including Name Of The Game, Eagle, Take A Chance On Me and the less well-known One Man One Woman, a fantastic, classic Abba ballad. 'Side 2' of the original LP is certainly a different kettle of fish, but Move On is gorgeous, and if you don't know Thank You For The Music already, well, where have you been? The Doris Day version (yes, really) is much better in my opinion than the one that finally made it on to the original album - worth getting just for that.

great music
My parents owned this on vinyl in the early 80's, great to hear it again. Seems even better now that it did then. Timeless music.

Abba: The Album
I originally bought this on LP when I were a lad! Bought it on CD recentlty mainly for the track "I'm A Marionette" which I loved back then and still like now. Read more

Good But...Well Not That Good
Abba had a tendency to produce well written songs, most of them becoming party anthems or songs you sing when you are absolutely brain dead on alcohol. Read more

Great follow-up to Arrival
Like Arrival, I bought this first on vinyl, then on CD, then a re-mastered CD, but have not bothered with the latest digipack version. Read more

A classic
This album is much more mature than ABBA's previous ones. It features some of their most accomplished recordings and I remember being surprised at the development in their music. Read more

ABBA at their peak: wonderful music, sublime harmonies.
This is truly ABBA at their peak. The perfect band of the 70s make their supreme album. From familiar tracks such as The Name of the Game and Take a Chance on Me (both UK no1 hits)... Read more

Definately not the 1st Abba to buy, maybe not even the 10th
A collection you can leave well alone, the only saving grace being the presence of a double dose of "Thank you for the music"... Read more

Some of the best songs ABBA ever performed are on this CD.
Probably ABBA's best record, 'The Album' contains only nine songs, but the high quality of many of these songs is testament to the skills which made this band the greatest pop... Read more

Not the best. But still pretty wonderful
A couple of duff tracks on this, including the one that some people seem to like, the kind of terrible Thank You For The Music. Read more
