Product Description

Record Collector, August 2009

For anyone into gutsier, hook-heavy, modpunkpowerpop, get ready for
the unleashing of Peel faves the Tours (remember Language School ?)
long-lost holy grail of an album. Talk about 30 years of hurt . Kerpow!

The songs are the best you ll see this side of the Undertones for sweet
melodic genius reincarnat ing the spirit that the Beat les early singles
had.

CD Description

FIRST EVER RELEASE OF LOST PUNK/POWERPOP CLASSICS FROM 1979

In 1979, there was a buzz about Tours that made them one of the hottest properties in the music industry. John Peel played the selfreleased Language School single for 50 consecutive nights, declaring it at the time his second favourite 45 of all time behind the Undertones Teenage Kicks The band were tracked down to Poole, Dorset by major and indie labels, including Virgin, Polydor/Fiction, Sire and others and a feeding frenzy ensued.

Signed to Virgin on an 8 album deal, the dual singer-songwriter attack of Ronnie Mayor (rhythm gtr/vocals) and Richard Mazda (lead gtr/vocals) led Virgin CEO Simon Draper to describe the pair as the punk Lennon- McCartney . 1980 should have been Tours year. Boasting a killer live show and incredible strength in depth, they had a seemingly endless collection of two-minute pop classics.
Yet the band were doomed never to make it to 1980, torn apart by a conflict of egos, and by a deep mistrust of industry dabbling with the band s line-up and sound. The unreleased songs were lost the band mythologised on countless compilations and, more recently, the internet powerpop scene until now..........

Well, way back in 1979 on the back of John Peel's airplay I bought both of the singles, 32 years later they are still with me and were still being played up to the delivery of this. Like many other bands at the time I thought that was that and that the Tours tracks would never be on CD.

Due to the complete demise of any credible music press I stumbled across this cd by accident as I am now forced to trawl through virtually at random to discover items like this.

A five if for nothing else the two classic singles, everything else is just a bonus as far as I'm concerned.

This is the album Tours fans have been waiting for, relive the magic of all your favourite songs here on one album, Be transported back to a Tours gig if you were lucky enough to have seen them. These are all classic little gems, why Tours were not huge is a mystery to me, lets get them the recognition they deserve now,buy this album you will not be disapointed, this is a album full of the joys of living on the south coast, music to make you happy, none of your gloom and doom here, classic pop songs, though the production is not to hot the songs still shine through,we have waited nearly thirty years for this lost gem dont miss it now.

The record label would have you believe that this is some kind of lost grail of power pop and although John Peel famously championed The Tours' 'Language School' single (playing it 50 nights in a row), he soon realised that they were one hit wonders. Listen to a whole CD's worth and you'll be inclined to agree; nothing else comes close to its catchy, exhilarating rush. 70s power pop was littered with bands who only had one flash of genius in them - The Jags' 'Back of My Hand', The Vapors' 'Turning Japanese', The Knack's 'My Sharona' etc - and sadly The Tours were no exception.
