Product Description

Re-Released Tweaked Version Of Classic Landcruising Album Detroit Techno Doesn'T Get Much Better Than Carl Craig's Landcruising Album, Originally Released In 1995 And Re-Released Here As 'The Album Formerly Known As'... The Original Tracks Are Given a Little Tweaking And There's a Couple Of Bonus Dubs And Extra Track Sparkle Thrown In For Good Measure. Unlike Much Of The Early Lo-Fi Detroit Techno, This Album Still Stands Up Both Content And Production-Wise Against The Majority Of New Releases And Is Possibly Mr Craig's Finest Hour. Essential!

2.0 out of 5 stars unimaginative vandalism 14 Jan 2006
Format:Audio CD
Like a moustache on the Mona Lisa, Carl Craig here demonstrates how little has to be done to completely alter the character of a thing of beauty. His Landcruising album, of which this is a creatively bankrupt reworking, was and remains one of the very few techno albums which transcended genre and is truly essential in anyone's collection. So quite why he's decided to extend and rework it (very subtly, admittedly) and, worse, shuffle its running order when it was already such a cohesive, perfect whole is baffling. For completists, it contains a couple of uninspired bonus mixes and a rotten new track which may date from the time of the original release but was rightly omitted.
Just get Landcruising.

5.0 out of 5 stars landcruising redux 13 July 2007
By Michael Shumay - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Detroit's Carl Craig (and we do consider him one of us, in so very many ways) has outdone himself, literally, by re-working his Detroit Techno classic album, 'Landcruising', in this brilliantly ethereal release. Some of the renewed tracks--e.g. the sparsely hypnotic "A Wonderful Life"--remain virtually un-touched; others, such as the driving trilogy of "Landcruising", "One Day Soon", and the Detroit classic, "Home Entertainment", are exquisitely crafted into something at once familiar and yet utterly fresh. The album maintains the core brilliance of 'Landcruising' (the album which this one is was formerly known as), yet Craig masterfully reconfigures the narrative, allowing formerly obscure scenery to shine in the radiant light of a new day. "Sparkle", which was not on the original, embodies this bold new vision herein. A true masterpiece, per usual, considering the source. Keep up the good work and buy this album!!! Truly a must-have for the Detroit Techno aficionado.
4.0 out of 5 stars Carl Craig - The Album Formerly Known As... 27 April 2011
By scoundrel - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Carl Craig's name has almost become synonymous with Detroit techno -- that unique blend of futurism and soul. With _The Album Formerly Known As..._, he once again sets his footprint firmly in the musical foundation. From the smooth strains of "Technology" to the more frenetic electronic strings of "They Were," Craig never seems at a lack of musical ideas or emotions. "Mind of a Machine," for example, throbs and hisses as it skates along, while "One Day Soon" and "Landcruising" both manage to bring out the soul of the machine. The bright arpeggios of "Sparkle" lend truth the track's title, and Craig ends the album on three beatless tracks that shows he can do as much without percussion as he can with.
