Probably ABBA's best record, 'The Album' contains only nine songs, but the high quality of many of these songs is testament to the skills which made this band the greatest pop group of the last thirty years of the 20th century. Included among the nine songs are two UK Number One singles (the pleasing 'Name of the Game' and the catchy but overplayed 'Take a Chance on Me'). There's two or three other songs which are among the best ABBA ever performed, and one which became very much the group's signature tune.
'The Album' opens with a very powerful track, which is without doubt one of ABBA's finest works; 'EAGLE' amply demonstrates the song-writing talents of Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus - anyone who thinks ABBA were merely chart fodder catering for the masses needs to listen to this song (mind you, it's hard to credit the same partnership also wrote the ever-so-slightly banal 'Hole in your Soul' on the same album). 'ONE MAN, ONE WOMAN' is a song which impressed me the from the first time I ever heard it - another of ABBA's very best. The spoken words at the beginning of 'MOVE ON' sound a bit pretentious and are, I think, unnecessary, but the song which emerges from them is rousing and rather attractive. Then there is 'THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC' - ABBA's theme song, and probably one of the best known songs of the pop era. It's very good too, with a memorably uplifting melody, and a title and lyrics which ensure it will forever be played whenever anyone wants a song to simply celebrate the joy of music and singing. But there is another song on this CD which I much prefer.

Their fifth album shows them maturing into classic singer/song writers in their own right. There are so many hauntingly beautiful bits of pop the infectious 'Take a chance on me','I wonder','The Name of the Game' and the majestic 'eagle'. This album yielded two number one smasheroos and yet every single track is a more than credible single in its own right. My favourite track has got to be the theatrical scene from the 'Girl with the golden hair' that I'm a Marionette. There is such tension and fear in the song it just grips me so much. The harmony vocals in 'one man one woman' proved that abba are at the very top when it comes to music. Abba what can I say but thank you for the music. i

This is definitely one of Abba's finest hours. The first four songs are absolute classics, including Name Of The Game, Eagle, Take A Chance On Me and the less well-known One Man One Woman, a fantastic, classic Abba ballad. 'Side 2' of the original LP is certainly a different kettle of fish, but Move On is gorgeous, and if you don't know Thank You For The Music already, well, where have you been? The Doris Day version (yes, really) is much better in my opinion than the one that finally made it on to the original album - worth getting just for that.

The songs here including Name of the Game, One Man, One Woman and Move On are timeless classics of the pop genre. The harmonies are the equal to anything else in pop,(including the Beach Boys), and the production just shimmers.
The remastered tracks reveal just how complex and layered the ABBA recording techniques really were.
A classic album.

This is truly ABBA at their peak. The perfect band of the 70s make their supreme album. From familiar tracks such as The Name of the Game and Take a Chance on Me (both UK no1 hits) to standards like Thank You for the Music, plus lesser known gems such as One Man, One Woman and I Wonder, this is a 'must have' album.
As an added incentive there's an extra, early version of Thank You for the Music to be going on with!

This album is much more mature than ABBA's previous ones. It features some of their most accomplished recordings and I remember being surprised at the development in their music. Eagle is one of their best songs ever. If there is a piece of music that makes one feel he or she can fly, then this is it. Put on your headphones, turn up the volume and fly away. Take A Chance On Me is a more typical up-tempo ABBA song with a great a-capella opening. One Man One Woman is a terrific ballad while The Name Of The Game is probably ABBA's best recording. This one has a lot to listen out for at repeated listenings. Move On is also a great song and the backing vocals are amazing. Hole In Your Soul has a great intro, but is probably the weakest song on the album. Thank You For The Music is another classic, definetely one of their most beautiful songs. I Wonder is even more dramatic, but it is also a very beautiful ballad. I'm A Marionette is a strange one. It is more rock than pop, but wonderfully produced. The bonus track is an early version of Thank You For The Music which is quite charming and makes the album more complete. I always felt it was a bit gloomy to end with Marionette.
Some people say that ABBA never managed to make great albums. Well this is one and if you want to hear more listen to Super Trouper, The Visitors and Arrival.
