Product Description

Aki Kaurismäki s deadpan, ironic and idiosyncratic films have established him as one of modern European cinema s most accomplished filmmakers. This box set presents three of his remarkable and highly acclaimed features. Crime and Punishment Kaurismäki s first feature follows the descent into crime of Rahikainen, a slaughterhouse worker and former law student, who murders a businessman and then begins a tense game of cat and mouse with the police. Effectively updating Dostoevsky s great novel to 1980s Helsinki, this remarkably assured debut offers a sharp critique of Finnish society. Calamari Union A group of men, all bar one called Frank, abandon their downtrodden neighbourhood in search of Eira a near mythical district across town that promises a better life. Kaurismäki s second features details their misadventures along the way with deadpan humour and rock and roll attitude. Hamlet Goes Buisness In this wicked and hilarious satire of the corporate world, Kaurismäki liberally updates Shakespeare s tragedy as a hard-boiled noir B-movie. Finnish comic Pirkka-Pekka Petelius plays an irresponsible playboy who finds himself involved in a vicious boardroom power struggle with his uncle, who plans to sell off his company s assets in order to corner the market on Swedish rubber ducks. La Vie de Bohème Freely adapted from Henri Murger s 1851 novel, this is Kaurismäki s highly individual take on the story of three bohemian artists a poet, a painter and a composer set in a timeless Paris. Shifting between heartbreaking drama and black humour, the fine cast features cameos from Jean-Pierre Léaud, Sam Fuller and Louis Malle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value 3 DVD box set 17 April 2011
By R. Wood
Format:DVD
This is an excellent box set containing four Kaurismäki movies plus a bonus interview with Jonathan Ross that he did in 1991

The first DVD is colour and contains Aki's directorial debut, Crime and punishment, an adaptation of the Dostoevski novel, which follows Rahikainen, a slaughterhouse worker who kills a businessman then plays a cat and mouse game with the two detectives who are persuing him.
The bonus feature is Aki's 1991 interview with Jonathan Ross, which takes place at the midnight sun film festival in Sodankylä

DVD 2 has two black and white movies, first is Hamlet goes business. A (very) loose adaptation of the Shakespear play which sees Pirkka Pekka Petelius in the role of Hamlet and co stars Aki's leading lady Kati Outinen as Ophelia.
Calamari union is a surrealistic adventure following the fortunes of 15 men all named Frank, and one named Pekka, who decide to leave their home town for a better life in Eire.

DVD 3 is another black and white movie: La vie de bohème, a French language film following the exploits of three bohemian artists, a painter, an artist and a composer.

This box set contains 3 DVD's in slimline cases and have English subtitles that can be turned off.

5.0 out of 5 stars EARLY KAURISMAKI 22 Mar 2010
Format:DVD
Kaurismaki never fails, at least if you like his deadpan humor. I see a lot of him in not in Jim Jarmusch but on Wes Anderson, less the cartoonish symetrical decor. From his first feature, adapting Dostoyevski's Crime and Punishment, he is solid.
In this box there is even a little gift: a rare tv documentary on the director. That's almost a treasure in Kaurismaki case.
Hamlet Goes Business and The Bohemian Life are fantastic, though i'm not too keen about the comedy Calamari Union (nor I'm too fan of his Leningrad Cowboys' series).
Huge director, leaves his brother's work in the dust.
