If you're new to the Aggrolites, a quick overview....an LA five piece that are tearing up the scene worldwide, growing in reputation and stature, now signed to Epitaph sub Hellcat....a label that rarely misses! Their music is underpinned by a deep knowledge and understanding of reggae...it's history, different styles and rhythms...and laid on top is a funky soulful vocalist and energy that doesn't lay down. Live, they are like a thundering train....they kick into songs like the Clash or a hardcore punk band, and move from song to song without stopping, tight and jaw-droppingly together.Think of early Trojan sounds, the Upsetters or Crystalites, keyboard heavy and exciting, sticky rhythms, pumping and vibrant...if that's your bag,you won't find another combo doing it aswell as the Aggros....but they're not just about restoring those glorious sounds to the fore....there's an added confidence,a slap in the face,a raw and edgy feel that is drawing in fans of funk, punk and anything else. Fans of early reggae sounds are drooling at the authenticity of the boys style, but their live performances are endearing them and this style to a much wider audience.
The album starts and ends with a dirty, funky statement of intent...an intro, and outro....inside, another 17 tracks...maybe 3 or 4 too many..but I can't find a duffer....and, yes, it's all reggae style, no horn drenched ska or smooth rocksteady....but this is their skill, showing off the different types of reggae, from the funky, to the keyboard stomper, to the vocal chants of Maytals style Mr Misery or Prisoner Song...sweet love songs as Love Isn't Love...or dub...it's all here...and all top quality, no cheesy imagery or cover version. This is the real deal. See them grow...buy the album..it will run and run, one lp you will be playing in years to come...and check out their first lp, Dirty Reggae. Get down to the Aggro sound!
