The Agent is a great movie. It is a rather simple story but it strings along quite nicely and the humour is really superb.
A chap goes to see his agent with his latest novel and all the agent does is to blow him out of the water and he does it in a way which makes you wonder if he knows what he is talking about (or doing for that matter). Eventually the writer finds a tool to blackmail the agent into doing what he is supposed to do in the first place, i.e., promote the writer. He then goes and does that and in the end he cuts a very good deal for the writer.
What I found hilarious is that several times during their time together the writer goes through severe episodes of self-doubt and every time the agent gets him back into the "I am a successful writer mode". I couldn't decide whether he does that because he believes in the writer - because he sounds rather sincere when he does it - or maybe it is just a ploy to keep the writer happy.
The end of the movie was not quite what I expected and it left me with a feeling of: "Let all writers unite and hang all agents from the next lamppost". But I guess you will have to watch the movie yourself to find out whether you agree with me.
The movie is 80 minutes in length. If you find yourself challenged by the length of the movie, there is also a 60" version in the extras.
Some of the other extras on the DVD I found a bit odd because you rarely see extras unrelated to the movie itself. Having said that, I really liked Summer because in 11 minutes a story is told most people would need two hours for. The other documentary "Speer in London" I found worth my while because you see Klaus Maria Brandauer acting when he is not in front of a camera.
All told, I really liked The Agent. It was good fun. And as I said before, if you are a writer or poised to become one, beware of your agent!
