Product Description

Review

‘What Fisk writes, in his often brilliant, highly authoritative prose is a wake-up call. Read ‘God damn that democracy’ and ‘Gold-plated taps’ back to back and you have, in a nutshell, the brutal truth of the Middle East problem succinctly expressed, together with proof that Fisk at his best is a hard act to match.’ Scotsman

‘Brilliant. Fisk at full throttle. 500 pages of his truthful scorn left me wanting more. O brave old world, that has such journos in it.’ Independent

‘Can work brilliantly: a piece on a racist headline superbly captures the hypocrisies in Western attitudes towards the war on terror. Infuriating and inspirational in equal measure.’ Metro

Praise for ‘The Great War for Civilisation’:

‘Brilliant…this powerfully-written book is filled with accounts of horror, pain and injustice. His triumph is that he has turned a slightly dubious and over-romanticised craft into a honorable vocation.’ Independent

‘His forte is straight reporting, such as his three interviews with Osama bin Laden. At least as good are his meetings with Saddam Hussein, Khomeini and Sadeq Khalkhali, the hanging judge of the Iranian revolution, and his close-ups of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the launch of Saddam's war against Iran, an ambush by Islamists of an Algerian police patrol, and a lift into trouble in an Apache attack helicopter on the Iraq/Turkey border.’ Guardian

‘A stimulating and absorbing book, by a man who speaks Arabic, who has known the region better than most, and has met the leading players, from Bin Laden to Ahmad Chalabi. A formidable production.’ New York Times

‘Full of furious, vivid and highly personalised writing…An important book by an intrepid and talented writer.’ Literary Review

The age of the warrior, contains a collection of selected writings from Robert Fisk's articles that were published in the Independent during the period spanning between August 1998 and January 2008. The book contains over one hundred articles, which are grouped according to their common theme rather than the publication's date. There are 12 themes in total and they cover topics related to the war in Iraq, Lebanon, The Jewish Holocaust, the Armenian's genocide and the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. The author has also included a couple of thought provoking themes about the misuse and abuse of language in today's reporting on events related to the Middle East and the relationship between blockbuster feature films and the reality that they are supposed to portray.

Robert Fisk is passionate about the issues that he writes about, and this comes across very clearly to the reader throughout the book. Unlike the majority of reporters today, who are doing their best to fall in line and conform (unquestionably) to the ideals of the state and authority, Mr Fisk provide an independent and honest view on the various topics that he covers; especially in relation to crimes against humanity, where he is dedicated to exposing and criticising the offenders regardless of their nationality or religion.

Although the articles are mainly focused on political events and personalities, there are number of articles that give the reader a brief glimpse into the private world of Robert Fisk through some childhood events and his early days in journalism.

Overall, this is a great collection of articles; educational, informative and a valuable resource for anyone who has an interest in the politics of the Middle East or journalism in general.

Robert Fisk is one of the most respected journalists writing today, and this book is up to his usual standard. Uncovering the real stories behind what you see in the media, The Age of the Warrior challenges and a result change my perception of world events.

The book contains over one hundred articles and cover topics related to the war in Iraq, Lebanon, the Armenian's genocide and the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Fisk also included a couple of thought provoking themes about the misuse and abuse of language in today's reporting on events related to the Middle East and the Arab world.

Robert Fisk is fervent about the issues that he writes about, and this comes across very clearly to the reader throughout the book. Unlike the majority of reporters today, who are doing their best to fall in line and conform to the ideals of the state and authority, Fisk provide an independent and honest view on the various topics that he covers; especially in relation to crimes against humanity, where he is dedicated to exposing and criticising the offenders regardless of their nationality or religion. The USA and Great Britain in particular, self reputed homes of democracy and freedom have their true colours exposed by Fisk's tireless and thorough research, and documentation. In reading this book you will in turns be aghast at the cruelty of our governments foreign policies, disgusted by the rhetoric politicians have spewed to "justify" their actions, but equally if not more importantly uplifted by true tales of the courage of many people around the world who stand up for justice and human rights while governments turn their backs.

I can't encourage people enough to read this and wake up to what our elected governments are doing on our behalf around the world. Don't go through life in a propaganda induced wave, but question what is going on and why.

By M. A. Krul TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Robert Fisk is one of the leading journalists in the world today writing on international politics and events, in particular as they relate to the Middle East, where he has lived for over two decades and has been a star correspondent. "The Age of the Warrior" is the title for this collection of his essays and articles in The Independent, his current newspaper, since he left the The Times when Australian right-wing magnate Rupert Murdoch bought it.

The articles for the most part dwell on the usual themes one would expect from Robert Fisk: the war-mongering, mendacity and hypocrisy on the part of the Western governments, be they American or British, German or French, with regard to the Middle East; the failures of the various Arab governments to be more than corrupt lids on the explosive mixture contained within their nations; the senseless violence and loss of life suffered in the area as well as all over the world due to political incompetence and imperialist malice alike in the past century; and more of that kind. However, unlike his two major books, "Pity the Nation" (Pity the Nation: Lebanon at War) and "The Great War for Civilization" (The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East), Fisk in this book is more reflective than angry in many cases, and the topics are broader in range as a result. He reflects (more) on his father and grandfather's legacies in the military, on earlier catastrophes such as World War I and the loss of the Titanic, and so on. Interesting is the addition of some cultural articles, in particular a collection of movie reviews, as well as some comments on journalism and even football.

In all of this, Fisk is his usual self, with his by now familiar 'cool anger', strong moral judgement, and fearlessness, as well as his tendency to put himself and his own reflections on events in the foreground more than the events themselves. Since Fisk is one of the best popularly accessible, non-academic writers on the political world of today, this book is very worth reading.
