I first came across the late Professor Davies's work when I read his thoroughly enjoyable biography of Owen Glendower (Owain Glyn Dwr). It was clear then that Rees Davies had an ear for a wonderful turn-of-phrase, as well as a firm grasp in telling a solidly-researched historical biography in an accessible way.
Whilst this history of Wales in the early to mid Medieval period is not, of course, a biography of one man, it is nevertheless a narrative told well. His grasp of both the details and of the overall picture throughout this period is clear on every page. I would not say it is an easy read - it is not helped by the publisher producing a volume with closely-packed sentences - but neither is it stodgy and dry.
It contains thirteen maps and six family trees, which certainly makes understanding the issues clearer.
As an Englishman with a passing interest in Wales and the Welsh, I found it a valuable corrective to my anglo-centric viewpoint. I learned a lot and will be drawn back to this volume again on my next visit to the principality.

Like so many people in Wales, I had a little bit of knowledge of this general subject from my secondary school history lessons (which, incidently, seemed dull and irrelevant to me at the time!)
I was essentially ignorant of our history in this troublesome period, and like so many Welsh people, my views of the period, were perhaps romanticised and idealistic. The subject didnt really appeal to me beyond what I thought I already knew; until I stumbled accross this book!
This is detailed, yet easy to read account of a turbulent, and complex period in our history. The depth and knowledge of the author as well as his most likeable character shines through in this outstanding piece of work. It is, without doubt, the best history book that I've read to date.
I shall be reading more of Professor Davies' books for sure, his writing style is so encaptivating, (pity I didnt have such an inpirational teacher in school!)
Now that my interest in this subject has been ignited by this book, I suspect I'll be reading a lot more on the subject! Thank you Professor Davies!

Academic, but in a good way!

This is an academic history of wales, published as a series from Oxford. But it covers most of the history and reveals a lot of new facts. It is highly indebted to John Edward Lloyd, but in this field who isn't? Davies advances the scholarship since Lloyd greatly.
This is a great book (and series) for anyone who wants to a good introduction to Welsh history. Although there have been a few better, there have not been many.
