I bought Martin Sketchley's Affinity Trap on the off-chance, but am glad I did. While this sort of science fiction has been done by many other people in the past, Sketchley brings his own style of darkness to the genre. The book is not so much about wars or the breakdown of society, but the struggle of the main character Delgado to overcome his own change of circumstances, and realising who he really is. Excellent.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one - a tempting mix of Sci Fi, adventure and love story.

Main character Delgado is quite a deep chappy with a lovely sense of humour, and he's having to re-think his approach to life in The Affinity Trap. After becoming addicted Lycern's to alien pheremones, he finds he doesn't want to hand her over to Earth's military, which is a bit awkward since they sent him to rescue her in the first place. Trouble is, if she doesn't go to Earth and marry Commander Supreme Myson, war will break out between Lycern's planet and Earth, and millions will die.

Sketchley has a nice flowing style and a good eye for description. There's stealth attacks and shoot 'em outs, plot twists and sex scenes, all packed between the covers of Affinity Trap. Which means there's something for everyone. I'm certainly glad I took the chance on this new author.

This is easily the worst book I've read. There are so many flaws it would be impossible to list them all, so here are two of the biggest ones:

(1) The main character, who is supposed to be so competent that he's chosen for a critical mission despite being deeply out of favour with the establishment, makes the wrong decision every single time he's presented with a choice. He is so utterly inept that he fails at nearly every turn despite the author's constant insistence that he's a hardened bad ass who knows how to get results.

(2) The 'plot' is a complete mess. Significant chunks are irrelevant, while others are so poorly constructed that they never convey the emotion they're trying to get across. Characters only act as the plot demands, never as how they should logically behave in their situation. It breaks all immersion when the protagonist gets himself in trouble yet again by rushing into a situation with no plan only to be bailed out because of a guard/solider/whoever being conveniently distracted by something much less important than the intruder standing in front of him.

The only reason I reached the end of this novel is that it was so staggeringly bad - as in "how could such a thing possibly be published" - that I wanted to be able to tell people just how woeful it is. You have been warned.
