Taking easy listening a stage further, The Affair keeps its dancefloor beats and bass lines more regulated, less jazzy than the authentic originals, though this modernising is never overdone. Emerging from the ranks of The Herbaliser, swinging Londoners Andrew Ross and Ralph Lamb shuffle an array of horns between them (saxophones, flutes, trumpet), making orchestral shapes with their detailed arrangements for these self-penned pastiches. By day, not surprisingly, they have a foot in the TV and movie soundtrack camp, explaining a penchant for throwing in surprise sounds and eerie trimmings. By disc's end, there won't be too many damp patches left on your courtelle trouser suit, the easy pace reined-in to a glide, a rich, floaty sound that has a solidly funky foundation. The duo have got all possible styles covered, gliding effortlessly from damp porn-flick chiffon to the stiff corduroy of Terry-Thomas, cutting from plastic bossa nova to formica cha cha cha, desolate Mafia whistling to spy-caper guitar-twanging. One of the more outrageous blends comes with "Le Masseur", its Franco-Indian sleaze punctuated by the sound of bullfrogs and leg-rubbing insects, serenading just outside the boudoir window.--Martin Longley

If you have a love for those easy listening sixties sountracks, then this is the album for you. Simply listening to the opening bars of "Glider Girl" should bring a smile to your face - if it doesn't, you'd better check out now.
The whole album trips by like a collection of far off memories that you can't quite pinpoint. This misplaced familiarity makes tracks such as "Cable Car", and the title track "the Affair", album even more accessible. I found myself liking every track, each one could be the main theme to a movie ("the Sicilian" being the most obvious culprit).
And by the time "Swinging London" roars off into the sunset your Affair with the Easy Access Orchestra will be complete, although far from over. Also, you won't have that dirty, used, feeling that accompanies other 'lounge' albums.
This is the real deal - excuse me whilst I turn my stereo up , "The Peeper" is about to come on....

Listening to this album is like sliding into a hot bath. It's endlessly cool, yet has pangs of humour ("Nasty Cha Cha Cha" and "Swinging London" in particular). It's a versatile album, which will perfectly soundtrack your barbecue, holiday, cocktail night, dinner party, trip to the beach...
It should appeal to both fans of easy listening and those more interested in albums like Nothing Changes Under the Sun, Since I Left You, Uh Oh and Something Wicked This Way Comes alike.

A real masterpiece!

When people make lists of really great "downtempo", "chillout", or "lounge" albums it's a shame that this disc is never mentioned. This would definitely fall more into the "lounge "catagory.It has a great 60's feel to it. Lots of organic instruments, spectacular horn arrangements (and I usually don't like horns) and only a couple of the tracks have vocals. It's very much like a soundtrack but this is NOT background music. If you like the Dining Rooms' "Tre" or "Numero Deux" it is very likely you'll like this cd but don't expect it to sound just like those albums, The Easy Access Orchestra has their own sound. Quirky, enchanting, haunting, romantic, and really, really beautiful.
