Book Description

13 Jun 1996

The Aesthetic Movement swept through England in the latter part of the nineteenth century, touching every sphere of the fine and decorative arts and bringing a new freedom to all aspects of design.

In architecture, the dogmatism of Gothic gave way to the charm of Queen Anne. In interiors, heavy Victorian forms were replaced by the lighter, fresher Japanese-inspired shapes; in the graphic arts, innovative methods - coupled with a new approach to form - led to the revitalization of illustration and book design.

Personified by such colourful figures as James McNeill Whistler, Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley, the movement was held together by the coherence of its philosophy and its adamant faith in elegance and richness. This beautiful and witty book will prove invaluable to enthusiasts of design and architecture and to all those intrigued by the social history of the period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captures the Aestheic Movement with flourish and energy 7 Jan 2014
By Julie Abraham - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'll be honest - I wrongly expected more of a picture book. I thought I was getting a hoard of visual samples of The Aesthetic Movement. Instead, I had to recalibrate my expectations on discovering that this is a scholarly work, richly endowed with the names of the central figures of the movement, and cameos which propel the reader on to the next example. If you come into it knowing nothing, it's a fast, deep dive, touching on the innovative, romantic and sometimes rebellious character of the artists, with illustrations of premier examples of the movement. It will take me a second reading, and a bit of background research, to fully process the information - but this book is a great catalyst. It's also laid out in coffee-table style, with plenty of white space, and quotations called out in over-sized font, so it's easy on the eyes, and easy to dip into and learn something even if reading time is limited.
