Product Description

Product Description

According to the Greek historian Herodotus, the fables were written by a slave named Aesop, who lived in Ancient Greece during the 5th century BCE. Aesop's fables and the Indian tradition, as represented by the Buddhist Jataka Tales and the Hindu Panchatantra, share about a dozen tales in common, although often widely differing in detail. There is therefore some debate over whether the Greeks learned these fables from Indian storytellers or the other way, or if the influences were mutual.

The kids love it. Especially the discussions that follow each story. This book contains excellent instructions for both parent and child. Note that the book is written in American.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aesop's Fables 14 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I wanted this book for my 4 year old grandson because his mother and I had enjoyed the fables when chldren.

This edition was comprehensive and beautifully illustrated. However, I should have preferred UK rather than US English spelling -- probably unreasonable given that this was a reprint of a Dover Publications original.

The lengths of individual fables facilitate demands for "another story, please" without postponing bedtime too much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delighted to finally have a copy 11 Mar 2013
By Beans
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was looking for a copy for ages but I hadn't seen a version I liked. This is lovely, lots of fables told in a nice way and the illustrations are from the original edition so really add to it. I haven't listened to the cd yet but it's handy to have in case the kids need to be entertained (or want to read along in a few years). The only thing I'm sorry about is that it is paper back. I think this would have been lovely as a hard copy but it's still nice to finally have it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ready for fables 29 April 2012
By Ellen
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am an English teacher and bought this book to use it in class. It's got 147 of Aesop's fables with their morals which is very handy for teachers or parents who need something to make their children think and learn. The CD has some of the fables recorded and you can use it for listening activities too. Excellent supplementary material.
