Way back in 1993 Sonic the Hedgehog was so famous that he got TWO cartoon series. One called "Sonic the Hedgehog" (SatAM) which had a darker tone and focused more on the storylines, whilst "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" (AOSTH) favoured more on the Looney Tunes-styled slapstick gags. This review focuses on the latter.

The AOSTH DVD box set consists of 65 episodes spanning 8 discs. Unfortunately that's too many to talk about in this review, so I'll just briefly talk about some of my favourite episodes.

1) First there's "Super Sonic Search & Smash Squad" the very 1st episode in the series. Here we see Sonic making Dr.Robotnik's army of robots look like muppets, and we also see how the idiotic robotic duo of Scratch & Grounder first came into existance.
2) Then there's "Birth Of A Salesman," the episode featuring the fast-talking dodgy door-to-door salesman, Wes Weasley. You'll be constantly in stitches as Mr.Weasley repeatedly cons Robotnik into buying crazy gadgets.
3) Next is "The Robotnik Express." I liked this episode a lot. It felt like such an adrenaline rush. I don't exactly know why I felt like that. I think it was the music and the fact that it involved a speeding train. But anyway, it's a good episode to watch.
4) "Boogey Mania" is a legendary episode. Not only is it funny, but it also features Dr.Robotnik's famous line "Snooping as usual I see." This line inspired the PINGAS fad currently going around on youtube.
5) Finally we have "Spaceman Sonic." Once again Robotnik (voiced by the late Long John Baldry) delivers another famous line "Why is my precious rocket ship drifting off into deep space?!"

What makes AOSTH a worthy purchase is that it is FUNNY.

For a lot of people Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog (AoStH) was probably seen as the weakest entry of Sonic The Hedgehog into the world of animation. While on the surface one would guess this was something quickly put together to make a quick buck if one takes the time to actually watch the show however you would find that for what it is, it's excellent.

Obviously, it's a silly show, light-hearted and fun, and if that's not your vision of Sonic then you'll probably hate it. Fair enough. If however you don't mind that then you'll thoroughly enjoy it.

The animation uses a simplistic style and for the time is very good, movements are fluid and faces are expressive and hilarious. The gags range from slapstick to topical jokes and references and for the most part work. Generally speaking however the shows main strength is Dr Robotnik, voiced by the late Long John Baldry he chews the scenery and his never-ending antics provide a barrel of laughs. Sonic is also very fun to watch and unlike the other animated shows he's in doesn't have a half-dozen friends you'd wish would go away (yeah, I didn't like Sally in SatAM, sue me). He has a great big-brother relationship with Tails who unlike in SatAM isn't pushed to one side (he is often told to hide while Sonic does fighting but at least he's allowed to travel with him).

Overall I don't quite know what it is about this show that I love show much; but whatever it is never fails to entertain me.

I used to watch this show as a kid, back in the days of Mega Drive Sonic games (y'know, the good ones), Sonic the Comic and Sega World.

Naturally, I had to buy this when I saw it, as have several of my friends since, and I love every moment of it.

With the amount of episodes on it, it's an absolute bargain price wise!

However, I would only recommend this boxset to two types of people
- Sonic fans/ collectors
- Those who watched the show as a kid

Newcomers probably wouldn't be able to appreciate this boxset, but for most of us, it is a must have piece of Sonic memorabillia

I'm happy to be able to look back on a cartoon of my childhood but one main issue I have with the set (albeit minor) is that on the boxes they have got a few of the titles of episodes incorrect.

E.g.
Disk 3 Sonic Gets Thrashed, is listed as Sonic Gets Trashed.
Disk 4 Musta Been A Beautiful Baby, listed as Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby
Disk 4 Full Tilt Tails, listed as Full Tilt Tales
Disk 6 Hedgehog of the "Hound" Table, listed as Hedgehog of the Round Table
Disk 7 Tails' Tale, listed as Tails' Tail

There are other examples on other cases but seems it was overlooked in box design.

The quality of the episodes is good to watch on TV especially considering the age of the show.

My four-year-old is at that age when he thinks his new trainers make him run faster, and that he can go 'superfast' like Sonic by crouching down before he jets off, he loves playing Sonic games so we took a shot at this DVD box-set when we saw it on sale and we weren't expecting the results at all. He has literally not stopped watching this in weeks. The value is terrific, too, with 65 20 minute episodes jammed onto 8 discs.

As for the content, well if you have a little boy I'd say they will love this. My son finds the slapstick violence hilarious in a Tom & Jerry kind of way, and actually showed me he'd learned lessons about crossing the road and looking after a baby from the short 'Sonic Sez' section at the end of each cartoon.
