Book Description

13 April 2012
When Danny Marin isn’t playing basketball, he spends hours drawing Shrinkman, his favorite comic-book superhero, or watching Shrinkman movies. His hero can shrink to the size of a bug. But, whoa—wait. Suddenly, Danny finds himself shrinking, too! His parents are horrified, his friend Megan thinks it’s funny, and his doctor is baffled. With each passing hour, Danny gets smaller and smaller—until he’s the size of a sparrow. Soon he’s fighting for his life against a grasshopper, a colony of ants, and even his own dog. He isn't safe anywhere. He has to find a cure—before he shrinks away forever.

Funny and terrifying and filled with BIG surprises, The Adventures of Shrinkman proves that it takes more than size to overcome impossible hurdles.

About the Author

R.L. (Robert Lawrence) Stine is one of the best-selling children's authors in history. His Goosebumps series, along with such series as Fear Street, The Nightmare Room, Rotten School, and Mostly Ghostly have sold nearly 400 million books in this country alone. And they are translated into 32 languages.

The Goosebumps TV series was the top-rated kids’ series for three years in a row. R.L.’s TV movies, including The Haunting Hour: Don’t Think About It and Mostly Ghostly, are perennial Halloween favorites. And his scary TV series, R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour, is in its second season on The Hub network.

R.L. continues to turn out Goosebumps books, published by Scholastic. In addition, his first horror novel for adults in many years, titled Red Rain, will be published by Touchstone books in October, 2012.

R.L. says that he enjoys his job of “scaring kids.” But the biggest thrill for him is turning kids on to reading.

R.L. lives in New York City with his wife, Jane, an editor and publisher, and King Charles Spaniel, Minnie. His son, Matthew, is a sound designer and music producer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shrinking Boy Story 26 April 2013

I grabbed this copy of The Adventures of Shrinkman as soon as I noticed that it was from the author of the Goosebumps series.

The Adventures of Shrinkman is more of a mysterious adventure than spooky as most of R. L. Stine's books are even though the cover looks quite scary.

Danny, the main character of the book is crazy about a fictional super-hero Shrinkman but then mysteriously finds himself shrinking. Was it the nasty tasting Shrinkman Cola he drunk? The blinding light that dazed him? It's a mystery - can he and his friend, Megan solve it before he shrinks away to nothing? It's a mystery/adventure that I'm sure your young reader would enjoy.

I think it's most appropriate for ages 7 - 10.

4.0 out of 5 stars Formulaic, but fun 26 April 2013

I think it was pretty much a requirement to read Goosebumps as a kid, so it's rather cool that the series has enough staying power for yet another generation. The Adventures of Shrinkman isn't going to win any literary prizes, but it's fun and just suspenseful enough to keep kids aged 7-10ish on the edge of their seats. Basically our hero Danny begins to shrink and it's a race against time to find out what caused it and how to reverse it before he completely disappears. There were a few inconsistencies in the writing; I'd give it 3 stars, but my 10 year-old declared it 'awesome' so I'll split the difference and give it four. This would be a good book for kids who like a little bit of horror and suspense (but not too much) or for a reluctant reader.

I got this book for my 8 year old and read it myself before giving to him. I felt it was just right for the 7 - 10 year old range. He had no trouble reading it and I heard him giggling out loud from time to time while reading the book.

The Adventures of Shrinkman tells the story of a young boy who is obsessed with a cartoon character, ShrinkMan. One day after seeing the Shrinkman movie Danny finds himself beginning to shrink! His parents and doctors can not figure out what is happening to him. Is it a science experiment gone wrong or is it the funny tasting drink he had before the movie? What can help Danny become normal sized again? You'll have to read the book yourself to find out ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Stijne still going strong.... 1 May 2013

Hey, this writer's only ten years younger than I am. Be that as it may, he does a great job of walking the tightrope between horror and humor. He remains gross enough on a juvenile level while actually poking fun at his characters and even himself.

This is a great take on Richard Matheson's "The Incredible Shrinking Man" giving the movie version of the story due credit while mentioning "The Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman". There's a bit of similatity to Doll Man, a comic book character who was popular back when I was a kid.

Hey, the bottom line is that this is typical R.L. Stine, fun and grotesque at the same time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for boys! 24 May 2013

My daughter is drawn to scary and weird stories so this book was perfect for her. We're reading it together after we watched "Goosebumps" on tv. It's a little too much for her to read on her own right now but we take turns reading and it's worked out really well. The book is well-written and enjoyable for adults as well.

I think R. L. Stine is one of my favorite children's authors right now. It's nice to be able to engage my daughter in something that isn't so Disney princess-ish.
