This unique Bond spin-off was officially sanctioned/commissioned by Glidrose Productions (and maybe was planned as the first of a series?)
Whatever the identity of the writer behind the pseudonym R.D.Mascott, he or she follows a familiar theme with our hero James Bond 003 and a half (nephew of 007) battling on through the pain barrier to try to achieve his mission.
Although this is a book aimed at young readers, there are some surprisingly adult references - "secret flattened places (in a forest) left by lovers" and the illicit growing of marijuana. There is also mention, albeit briefly, of a character named "Chastity Carstairs, who sound more like one of Kingsley Amis' imaginings.
The description of the "Bond girl", Sheelagh Smith, as a "nit-ridden gyppo" may not have passed a modern publishing editor, but clearly was no problem in 1967!
This book really is worth reading. It is a necessary part of any serious Bond collection.
