This seemed so promising ... gentle, nostalgic and written by someone with a love of language. I found, however, that I just couldn't get into it. After promising so much, it just failed to deliver for me. For one thing, I thought it was supposed to be funny but I found it difficult to find it even mildly humorous.

I had never heard of this series before, but had my curiosity piqued by the fact the writer has written a book I greatly enjoyed (Eats, Shoots & Leaves). I thought I'd give it a go.

It proved to be good, heart-warming, nostalgic listen, providing, if not belly-laughs, then gentle chuckles & many smiles. I thought it was well acted (how lovely to hear Janet Ellis popping up), though one or two of the characters were rather stereotypical, the language used rather quaint (though, to be fair, in keeping with the time in which it's set), & the pace somewhat pedestrian. However, the further I listened, the more I was drawn in to this safe, innocent by-gone age, & it did remind me of the various drama series I would listen to when I was a child on the 'wireless'.

It gave me several hours of good, innocent, gentle fun. It would have provided something more, however, if the pace had been picked up & a little excitement injected into the proceedings. Yes, it is set in the 50s, but even that time could be exciting, quite brutal & fast-paced.

It helps to know that Lynn Truss got her idea for Inspector Steine from the on-screen disclaimer at the start of the film version of Graham Greene's Brighton Rock [DVD] [1947] that there is no longer any crime in Brighton. What, she imagines, if the Brighton Police Force believed that disclaimer?

The Adventures of Inspector Steine is set in 1957 Brighton, where there is no crime and the police force is busying itself with other things. Except that the police station charlady, Mrs Groyne, is actually the local criminal mastermind, something that Constable Twitten understands, but Inspector Steine completely fails to grasp.

It's a light comedy drama with elements of parody and farce, but it's densely written, and (unlike a lot of radio comedy) requires concentration to follow. The radio series suffered from going out in a late-night slot, and I found it hard to follow as I was drifting off to sleep. Having this CD release has given me the opportunity to skip back whenever I felt I'd missed something worth hearing.

There are some brilliantly funny moments, and some completely corny set-ups, such as in episode three, where a villain who becomes compulsively homicidal towards police officers when he sees black-and-white patterns is found heading towards the official opening - by Inspector Steine - of Brighton's first zebra crossing, attended by a full cast of nuns in habits, black-and-white minstrels and penguins. The lunacy is trowelled on, but the signposting is kept slight, which makes the comedy all the funnier.

On the strength of this CD I have now purchased the whole series. Just like Sunday afternoon radio in the 50's,60's and 70's, this is not side splitting humour. It's silly in places, needs imagination to accept the ridiculous situations that develop but most importantly, it makes me laugh!
It really is gentle slightly old fashioned humour that will stand the test of time. Wonderfully acted and produced, I love it.
Get it for winter Sunday afternoon and sit down and listen to one chapter a week. That way it will last a long time and will change your Sunday routine forever.
Mind you, I'll bet you listen to the whole CD in one go - just like I did!

Although a fan of Radio 4, where at least three series of 'Inspector Steine' have apparently been broadcast I had not come across the programme before. I suspect it was broadcast in the 6.30pm slot on weekdays where there are some hit and miss comedy shows. However, this is not just comedy but, apparently, also a thriller. I have to say I don't think it's a thriller and is of only limited comedy merit. While well made with fair to good acting, this police situation comedy set in Brighton in the 1950s, is let down by the script which just isn't that funny. I smiled at some points whilst listening, particualry those involving Mrs Groynes the tea lady and criminal mastermind, but those moments were few.

If I'd come across this programme on the radio I would probably have listened to it in a passive way. I wouldn't seek the show out though and won't be listening to the CDs again. There's simply better radio comedy out there.

Enjoyable for some (especially for people who might be fans of the Thin Blue Line tv comedy series), but might seem a little old fashioned for most people below the age of 50. That's not to take away from the good acting and well produced episodes of this complete 3rd series. Disappointing for me, not quite what I thought it would be but I'm sure it has a lot of fans.
