Understanding the ways of a distant land in another era 23 Jun. 2014
By JH - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The Adventures of Ibn Battuta by Prof. Dunn recounts the complex and cosmopolitan world of medieval Dar al-Islam in a friendly, but wise prose. He follows the story from Ibn Battuta's book Rihla, and offers the reader context and commentary on cultural and historical circumstances to bridge the reasoning of this world to modern readers. Prof. Dunn thus allows readers to understand the dynamics beyond the facts, something that few scholars are able to do for lay readers.

Ibn Battuta has his own agenda, so Prof. Dunn performs his due diligence by cross-referencing and validating various stories with modern scholarship. His understanding of medieval languages, trade routes, contemporary conflicts, as well as lay and official protocol in different parts of the region (Malmuk Egypt, Ilkhan Persia, etc.) illuminates the reasoning behind the meander of our traveling unemployed lawyer.

Prof. Dunn's book is accessible because he gracefully acclimates the modern reader to the ways of a distant land in another era. That said, the legions of notes provide valuable references and insight for those seeking greater detail.

Highly recommended for both casual and seasoned medieval collection.

amazing retelling of and meditation on the travels of this ... 12 Nov. 2014
By James Kenney - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I was leery of this book when I realized it wasn't an actual translation of Ibn Battuta, but a summary of Ibn Battuta, however Ross Dunn is an extraordinary scholar completely at ease with his subject and his period. It is a powerful, amazing retelling of and meditation on the travels of this remarkable 14th century vagabond. If you like Islamic history, this book will bring it to life for you.
A Different Perspective of the World of Islam 14 Dec. 2014
By A. Paolini - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This book is not the diary of Ibn Battuta as he traveled through out North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Rather it is excerpts from his written memoir with descriptions of the the political and social situation in the places and time that he traveled. Dunn provides a view of the Islamic world with which most of us are unfamiliar and certainly one that is at great variance with the one today.

By Alondra Pineda - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I bought this for my college History class and though it isn't a straight story, which I would have greatly preferred, the story of the life of Ibn Battuta is still clear and his journey across the Eastern Hemisphere is still as impressive today as it must have been then.
