Product Description

Product Description

In this engaging series of Advent meditations, David Rhodes uses stories and experiences from the streets of the inner city to help us rediscover the startling message of the gospel. Sometimes humorous, often moving, the book makes adventurous reading. If we run the risk of loving, we soon learn the meaning of vulnerability. Mary knew from the beginning that life with the Christ-child was not going to be easy. Perhaps we should expect it to be no less challenging to live as Christ's disciples today. Lisa Friend, who worked as a prostitute before coming to faith, writes: 'How can you believe you are worth anything if you have been told all your life that you are less than nothing? David Rhodes writes about us, the outcasts. He communicates the radical challenge of God's love to the Church and to Christians everywhere.' 'If you buy only one book this Christmas, then this is the one to go for.' Reform magazine. ' . . . urges us to look beyond the brightly lit shops and glitter of lights to see the true angels of Christmas, many of whom wear 'ragged trousers'.' The War Cry. "'This book may disturb, it may infuriate, but it may lead to a new realisation of Christmas and if that sounds trite, believe me it is not.'" Digest

If you are looking for a book to read through Advent which leaves you feeling warm and cosy, thinking of Christmas lunch and parties then this is not the book for you. If you want to read a book which puts the whole of the Christmas experience into stark reality in today's Britain; a book which in turns makes you feel uncomfortable, sad, angry and inspired then this is the one. David Rhodes writes as one who has really known the situations and people he talks about in "The Advent Adventure"; the style of the book makes it easy to read and understand; each chapter is thought-provoking and so relevant for Christians (and others) today.. The only problem with the book is that it is dated so the reader has to have a lot of willpower only to read the chapter set for that day.

A Christmas Cracker 15 April 2006
Format:Paperback
An excellent and engaging collection of stories revealing the real meaning of Christmas. Grounded firmly in the reality of our own towns and cities and challenging the money driven ethos in which we live. But, above all, a great read!

Rhodes's own exhortation to avoid "the perverse tendency to be envious of other people's good fortune" is ignored throughout this book. This is theology turned on its head by political dogma - modern stories obscured by a somewhat old-fashioned political hectoring. This is a view of the world driven by guilt where anyone who is not "rich" (never defined) is a victim. And where there is a victim there must always be someone else to blame. Apportioning that blame leads to a simplistic and one-sided view of the world which provides no constructive reference point to agree on the practical implementation of social justice. The Church has every right to indulge in politics. But if, as here, it does so by an uncritical alliance with a bankrput policy it is inevitable that its theology will be judged in the same light.
