The Advanced Art of Stop Motion Animation 25 July 2010
By Damien - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
"The Advanced Art of Stop-Motion Animation", by Ken Priebe, is far more than an update of his earlier book, "The Art of Stop-Motion Animation". As the name suggests, it covers advanced techniques, and is ideal _after_ you're comfortable with the basics of stop-motion animation. Beginners may be lost, or find some of the content overwhelming, so I advise them to start with Ken Priebe's first book.
This book covers the latest technology, use of digital cameras, animation software, compositing, digital effects, construction techniques, materials, and more.
"The Advanced Art of Stop Motion Animation" presents variety of puppet-making techniques and character/facial animation (eg: wire armature, internal mechanisms/paddles, replacement heads, replacement face-parts, and even cable-control). For me, that reinforces the idea that there's no "right" or "wrong" way to do it, only what works for you and suits your artistic style.
One of the great strengths of this book is the interviews. Ken Priebe has interviewed some of the most talented stop-motion animation artists from around the world, and they share their likes and dislikes, tricks of the trade and inspirations. These segments are peppered with production art and behind-the-scenes photos showing how things are made.
"The Advanced Art of Stop-Motion Animation" is written in a conversational, easy to read style, and Ken Priebe's passion for animation is infectious.

Wonderful. Covers a lot of things I wanted to learn about. 16 July 2010
By Marc_H - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The author of this book had announced it via [...], and many of the book and CD's contributors visit there to learn. So I got it as soon as I heard about it because of the content that Ken described. It covers the higher-end of stop motion on both an independent 'garage' level of budgets, as well as detailing what happens in professional studios. Most other books only cover things for beginners, or they don't cover things in much detail because there's so much to do. Ken covered the basics in his previous book, 'The Art of Stop Motion Animation', so this time he could avoid that and write about more specific things.
I was actually excited while reading this, it's so wonderful to see what so many people are doing within this craft, and even though I'm well aware of and even talk to many of them, there is a lot I had completely been missing, as well as the section on the history of stop motion animated features, there's now a list of films I've got to check out.

Great book.
If you're into Stop Motion Animation, and, like me, want to learn as much as you can about it, then I cannot recommend this book enough.

Great Resource 1 Aug 2011
By Stephen McAllister - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have read this through and have learnt a lot. I am currently setting up my own studio to animate. The book has many resources to gather information from and as I start animating I can see this being a constant resource for my projects. An earlier version was available and is quoted in the book as being a beginners where this is quoted as more advanced. I found this resource easy to read and understand. I am only a beginner and had no trouble with the base concepts of the book. It has a lot of interviews (8 or 10 in all) but the websites are awesome and it is interesting to hear what people have learnt along the way.
