5.0 out of 5 stars Masterly writing from a masterly writer... 16 Sep 2000
Format:Paperback
Burroughs' Adding Machine is a perfect book for people who know the man's work and would like to know more about what drove him as a writer. In this collection of essays WSB talks about all manner of subject; from his early life and his first attempts at creative writing to explainations of how he views the word as a control mechanism and why cutting up re-invents the modes of communication. But this is not WSB talking exclusively about himself as he writes openly about other writers, such as Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and Greene as well as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. For all those people unfamiliar with, arguably, America's greatest twentieth century writer, read The Adding Machine and be spellbound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lucid and wise. Proves Burroughs was a genius. 22 April 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
A must read for anyone interested in William S. Burroughs. In 'The Adding Machine' he offers his opinions and wisdom to the reader in a much easier to understand form than he does with his fiction. Try this book before 'Naked Lunch'.
