Exhaustive Analysis, but Minimizes the Contribution of Individual Talents 4 Dec. 2011

I really like parts of this book: Murray has delved deeply into the industrial conditions shaping the way a film adaptation appears on screen. She is particularly good on the idea of synergy; that publishing and cinematic interests go hand in hand, especially when it comes to the question of obtaining rights to film a book. She also focuses on the roles agents play in forging the best deals for authors across various media. However I think her book overlooks the fact that adaptations are the product of creative talents: whatever the industrial forces shaping an adaptation, it still has to be put together by screenwriters and directors, and responded to by audiences, who might interpret what they say in a very different way from the ways in which the producers/marketeers might want the film to be interpreted.
