* The five original vinyl volumes of "The Ace Story" were among the best (and best received) vinyl albums of this Ace's formative years. Given their significance - both historical and musical - we're delighted to announce that, over the next couple of years, we'll be welcoming them back into our catalogue at regular intervals.
* Johnny Vincent's Ace label was the jumping-off point for Ace Records' efforts to preserve rock'n'roll and R&B history. Johnny was among the first to license repertoire to Ace, more than 30 years ago, and it's a pleasure to bring a selection of his fabulous New Orleans-produced good-time music back home.
* Each volume will contain the original vinyl "Ace Story" compilation, expanded to 24 tracks with the addition of tracks which complement those that were originally compiled by Ted Carroll, Roger Armstrong and the late Ray Topping.
* All of Ace Mississippi's big names feature across the five volumes, as will all of the company's most significant hits - remastered for the best sound that you will ever have heard them in.

I originally heard some of these songs on a cassette freebie with NME many many years ago and loved them. This was back somewhere in tghe 80s, back when I was fresh out of punk / new wave, after a youth spent on Floyd and Zepplin (and hey some unpleasant prog rock memories - let's not go there). Late in the day I was on a journey discovering 60s and early 70s soul then along came this free cassette. Wow was blown away. What's not to love about this totally good time music?
This just exhudes good time. Frantic beats that ake you want to swing and dance that make life somehow seem a bit more fun.
The whole thing is driven / underpinned by Huey Smith and The Clowns (you might know Don't Cha Just Know It and if you do you will love this CD), stand out contributions by them Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu and the totally wonderful and personal favourite Quit My Job (which is credited to Bobby Marchan). But there is more much more, Sea Cruise - Frankie Ford pumps along driven by a brass ection to die for, You Little Baby Faced Thing - Joe Tex which sounds like Little Richard in his prime, I Love My Baby - The Phaetons that sort of classic desperate ghostly guitar piano music that resonates early 60s, and Morgus the Magnificent - Morgus and The Ghouls (Dr John in an early guise) 'we don't go out to roll and rock we get our kicks from the house of shock'.
Anyway this isn't meant to be an essay it's just meant to say listen to this and have fun - if you like the Mark Lammar series of CDs or Little Richard or just having a good time buy this.

This is the UK Ace reissue label celebrating its US counterpart: Ace records of Jackson, Mississippi. The relationship between the two goes back some years, to a friendship between Ted Carroll, founder of the Rock On record shops, and Ace USA's Johnny Vincent, who agreed not only to license Ted's reissuing of Ace material in the UK, but also that Ted's UK label could use the Ace name. Thus was a living legend among UK labels born.
Johnny Vincent was in fact the co-writer of two classic songs that appear here: Frankie Ford's Sea Cruise, and Huey `Piano' Smith's Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu. These are probably the best tracks, and most are in similar vein: R&B with a `Swamp Rock' tinge. Look out for two by Jimmy Clanton: Just A Dream, and Another Sleepless Night. Also, ballad style, Roland's Stone's Just A Moment. I have to say that Mac Rebennack's Storm Warning didn't do much for me.
As ever with Ace records, the liner notes are excellent, giving background to each track and an essay about the label. This is the first of a planned five volumes, of which Vol 2 as been reached so far. Don't know if I'll buy the set, but if you like the genre, Vol 1 is worth a punt.

Ace Records of Jackson, Mississippi compiled by Ace Records of London. Nice... This is a reissue of Ace's original vinyl release from 1979 with 10 bonus tracks, for good measure. In total: 24 tracks of good-time Southern rock `n' roll, R&B and rockabilly. Highlights are plentiful - I counted about 24 of them - and for a genuine fix of old school / high school Americana you'll struggle to find better on a single disc. A few names for you: Frankie Ford of course. Both "Sea Cruise" and "Alimony" are present. There are a couple of Dr. John rarities: Mac Rebennack's "Storm Warning" and Morgus & The Ghouls' "Morgus The Magnificent". Huey Smith & The Clowns provide both versions of "Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu" and in-between invent the "Pop-Eye".
I could go on, but I shan't. Let's just say if you own the original vinyl version, you need this. If any of the names I've mentioned above mean anything to you, you need this. If classic rock `n' roll rocks your boat, you need this. Indeed, if you're alive, you probably need this CD. I don't think that's overstating the case. 9/10.
