Product Description

Product Description

The Accrington Pals is a poignant and harrowing play set in the early years of the First World War, as the country's jingoistic optimism starts to wane and the true terror of warfare gradually becomes clear. The play looks at both the terrifying experiences of the men at the front and the women who were left behind to face social changes, deprivation and the lies of propaganda. While often comic vignettes portray the everyday life of a town denuded of men, the men face the terror that is the Battle of the Somme. This compassionate play portrays the devastating effects of war on a typical Lancashire mill town and the suffering of everyday people. This Modern Classic edition includes a new preface by the author, plus a full introduction exploring the themes, social/historical context and characters. The edition will also include a chronology of key events mentioned in the play and classroom activities.

This is a play that can be read on so many levels, its a touching tale of the trials and tribulations of a group of young people from Accrington who 'do the right thing' and sign up for service in world war one. It is a play about relationships, between a group of young men, between the men and the women they leave behind, and about one mans relationship with God. We see the struggle of a single working class woman surviving in a man's world, fighting to put her stamp on her own live. We learn about the loss of childhood and dignity in the trenches and the devesating impact the war had on the close knit working class communities in Britain. The result of the war leads the soldiers to the ultimate sacrifice, the loss of their lives and the questioning of their faith in God in the hour of death. A great play, moving, funny and shocking. Highly recommended.

A play that allows us to enter the minds of the common people who lost so much during the first world war. The soldiers who left, in innocence and ignorance, to fight for their country; and those left behind to grieve for their loss. The play compares the idealist socialism of the artist, Tom, with the individualism of May, with her self help philosophy. The play is based on the real life tragedy of The Accrington Pals, which adds poignancy. It is accessible and sensitively written and well worth reading.

A smashing little book. Accrington Pals is about kitchener's volunteer army during World War I. This army was made up of friends, brothers, cousins - 104 men were recruited within the first 3 hours - half being recruited from Accrington. There wasnt a person living in Accrington and the surrounding areas who did not know someone in this volunteer army. They were trained to fight. A very moving true story about about what happened to these often young men when they went off to war. A great little play.
