Book Description

25 Dec 2008 Rogue Agent

He's blown up a factory, lost his job, and there's a chance that he's not really a Third Grade wizard after all. Career disaster strikes again.

Luckily, an influential friend manages to get him a posting. So it's off to New Ottosland to be the new Court Wizard for King Lional. His back-up, an ensorcelled bird with a mysterious past, seems dubious. But it's New Ottosland, or nothing.

Unfortunately, King Lional isn't the vain, self-centred young man he appeared to be. With a Princess in danger, a bird-brained back-up, and a kingdom to save, Gerald soon suspects he might be out of his depth. And if he can't keep this job, how can he become the wizard he was destined to be ...

5.0 out of 5 stars A stonking good read 23 Feb 2009
By Teach
Format:Paperback
How quickly we fickle humans change our minds! I bought this book mainly because I thought it looked like a 'fluffy' book, one I could read to entertain myself until the book I REALLY wanted to read was delivered. After the first few pages my imagination was captured by the world Ms Mills had created. A great eye for character, Reg had me laughing out loud...which draws a few funny looks on the tube! I couldn't put this book down and savoured every moment it took to finish. As to the book I had been waiting for...well that's now my 'fluffy' book that will keep me entertained until the next book in the series is published. Ms Mills if you're reading this, please write more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read stick with them 4 May 2011
By marsayy
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed them, a bit different to the general wizard type books. I've read all three books and although some areas were a bit slow, a definate good read. I would have liked a bit more in the second book about the wizard rather than the withches as they were a bit boring in places but well done. I would definatley recommend them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic, light-hearted read 11 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I was a bit skeptical when i picked up this book and i admit it was mainly because of the cover! Yes, we judge our books by their covers and this one is particularly bad! However, once you get past that what you discover is a fantastic, light-hearted, rip-roaring fantasy book that i polished off in a matter of days. A great storyline, funny and believable characters - a genuine pleasure to read. It reminded me of the fantasy legend that is mister Terry Pratchett and quite frankly thats pretty damn high praise!

3.0 out of 5 stars A really enjoyable read! 21 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
This book really surpsised me because I didn't think it would be that good. It does get off to a slow start where Gerald is pitying himself but it gets better. If you're at that part now then stick to it because it's so funny and it has a good story to it.

Princess Mel and Reg are so odd characters but they've got to be the funniest "people" in the book.

The book is about a boring 3rd grade wizard who finds himself possessing power that is SO powerful that the 1st grade wizards would harm themselves attempting what he did. After losing his job(again) he decides to have a fresh start so he went to another world to work for a handsome prince.

But does the Angelic beauty hide the Devil...

Will all his friends die if he doesn't do an unforgivable task...

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, read if you like prachett 5 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed this book. I think if you like prachett you will also enjoy this series.

The main character is strong, even when life goes badly for him. The princess in the book is funny too and many unexpected things happen.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a suprise 23 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I really did not expect much of this. Thought it would just be a nice light read - and to start of with that was pretty much it. Gerald the Wizard gets into a scape, blows up a factory, and becomes pretty much a joke. To let things blow over he takes a job in another Kingdom as advisor to its new king. What Gerald does not realise however until it is far too late, is that he is the 6th person to take this job, and that his predecesors really did not hang around long. The story really gets interesting from the moment Gerald and Reg (his talking bird), emerge from the Portal in new Ottosland. Lional, the new King proves problematic from the word go, and things dont stay light and fluffy for long. Things get suprisingly dark, suprisingly fast, Lional is not as he first appears, and by the end of the book Gerald is a bit of a tormented soul, with a guilt complex set to drive him forward for later books. Some of the characters still need a bit more fleshing out, and the whole book could do with a bit more substance, but overall, I really enjoyed this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 18 Feb 2009
By Peter Miller VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have to say that I find that fantasy books by women authors don't always click with me, however I still buy them from time to time.
I am so glad that I bought this one. It is extremely funny and yet very exciting and an excellent story that builds steadily. I liked the characters, especially Reg.
I found that the mixture of modern things like telephones and cars and magic did take a bit of getting used to but in a way that was like Harry Potter and I soon found that I accepted it.
If I had to choose one word to summarise this story it would be "Brilliant"
When is the next one due? Oh yes, and it says Trilogy, please don't stop at 3, keep 'em coming.

Reasonable characterisation and plot, though oddly paced and with some annoyingly repetitive over used expressions (I thought at one point that if I saw "ass over tea-kettle" one more time my kindle was going out the window). Nicely consistent and well drawn setting is the most engaging thing, but constant squabbling of characters is wearing after a while.
