Product Description

3CDs worth of musical destruction from the comic genius, who with baton in one hand and revolver in the other, led his gang of City Slickers down a merry path for a few wonderful years. A typical Spike Jones record initially dazzles us by the wide variety of strange noises he uses. Closer listening reveals that screams somehow blend with strings to produce the desired line of melody while cuckoos and klaxon horns astonishingly gel with trumpets. Jones' success was achieved by his ability to contrast the orthodox and the ludicrous in a balanced manner.

I have overdosed on Spike Jones a bit lately, and have purchased several of his CDs off Amazon.
This is a triple CD album, full of whacky interpretations of, for their time, well known tunes.
If like me you have other Spike albums, then you will find you already have some of the tracks here, however you will also find they are different versions. For example, 'Chloe' is on just about every Spike Jones CD, but here is a version I have never heard before.
There are also some hilarious tracks, that were new to me, but instantly became some of my favourites. Examples are the Tennessee Waltz and Rum Tee Diddle Yump. On first hearing, the latter one had me in stitches.

My brother and I loved Spike Jones and his City Slickers way back in the 1950s when we listened to mostly American music on the radio, in NZ. I've introduced the band to my British grandchildren, who originally were slightly perplexed as to why their grandmother could possibly enjoy the corny, shambolic, noise and especially all the rude sound effects. Ironic little numbers like, 'Heil (fart) Heil (fart) Right in der Furer's Face', have gradually become meaningful to them and now they sing along to many of the songs, like 'Take me Back to Old Virginia' and the send-ups of those weird drinking songs (which we didn't understand, not knowing anything about the abolition of prohibition) complete with sound effects. This collection is, as the box says, absolutely essential. So much clearer and better than my childhood versions. It arrived very quickly, well before the deadline, and in perfect condition. If you can still remember American hit records from the 50s — and even if you can't — this is a quirky addition to your collection Particularly good for long car journeys!

I used to hear the odd (and I mean odd) Spike Jones record as a kid in the 50s. For the price, this a good deal, if only for "The Man On The Flying Trapeze". Every home should have one.
