Book Description

Well, someone’s to blame.
It could have been the original makers of the Life-Creation box,
the magnificent device that helps create the planets,
the stars, life and its associated After-Life.
It could have been one of the Life-Creation Gods,
tasked to activate these devices causing the Big Bang.
Maybe the particular maker of our galaxy was less than attentive?
Whatever.
The simple, and rather disturbing fact remains:
Earth is missing its Heaven.
Two powerful Gods from The Origin find out this disturbing news and realise the finger of blame could well be pointed at them. They send two of their own mortals, Bartholomew and Hector, from their own planet to Earth in an attempt to quickly rectify the situation. On Earth, Bartholomew and Hector meet three unique individuals who will, unwittingly, help them:
Jane Middlemore is a local journalist whose otherwise contented life is blighted by a very dark shadow. She suffered an horrific assault when she was a teenager. It is a night that will always haunt her.
Desmond Jones owns a small coffee shop - Descafé, which he happily runs with his wife Juliet. But despite this show of domestic bliss, he carries a terrible secret from his schooldays; one that regularly rears its ugly head.
Finally we meet Rev. Alistair Stewart - the proud vicar of a local church and Emily, his atheistic wife. Alistair has a daily battle with twin demons: Apathy and Cynicism.
All three meet Bartholomew and Hector one extraordinary afternoon, changing their lives forever.
But will redemption be on the agenda..?

5.0 out of 5 stars The Absent After-Life 7 Sept. 2012
This is a very good light read, ideal for a holiday or by the fire on cold winter days/evenings.I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is quite well written and an excellent effort for a first novel. Moreover it is DIFFERENT!. The characters are well rounded and mostly likeable and there are some good little surprising twists and great bits of humour. The concept itself is novel and it never loses sight of its subject while digressing interestingly throughout. I highly recommend The Absent After-Life. May we look forward to subsequent books? I hope so. Well done Mark Holmes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just. Bloody. Genius 26 Sept. 2012

I wanted something new to read. I was bored of the whole "Oh my Mr Grey" saga ( although I did really enjoy the books), and predictable boy meets girl love stories that litter my bedside table. The Absent Afterlife is a fresh, new and totally enjoyable read. I loved the gritty prologue and it's actually a book I can pass on to my husband once I've finished, knowing that he'll enjoy the well-formed characters and unpredictable storyline. So Mr Holmes, don't leave us hanging, when's the next book out?

4.0 out of 5 stars Humorous and fun 18 Sept. 2012

This was a fun summer read. The concept was original and quirky. The characters were well rounded though sometimes their descriptions were a little too lengthy. At a time when society really is grappling with it's evolving secular status, the storyline really did have you wandering off into the realms of 'just what else is out there?'
There were passages in which the writer did wander a little too far off on tangents (maybe some ideas could be tucked away on an ideas pile for future books)
Overrall, enjoyable and would look for this author again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original Story 20 Dec. 2013

I was expecting a fairly traditional story (not that that's a bad thing), but found myself being completely wrong-footed by the originality and not all predictable nature of the narrative. It took it's time to bed in, but once there, I really enjoyed it :-)

A good book for holiday and book club readers , it's amusing concept of the afterlife and its creators will provoke discussion. I found my attachment to the characters was cemented towards the end of the novel and I would look forward to a sequel to further explore their situations and reactions.
