I was delighted to get this entire second series of classic 60s spy series "The Avengers",the first time we meet Cathy Gale(Honor Blackman)who helps John Steed(Patrick Macnee)in seventeen of these stories,in three of the stories, hes joined by Dr.Martin King(Jon Rollason)a character created to use three storylines, left over from the first series of Patrick Macnee and Ian Hendry.(Dr.David Keel)
Honor Blackman's Cathy Gale going on to be Steed's full time partner in all 26 episodes of season three of "The Avengers".
Steed's final partner in this season is the young naive singer,Venus Smith(Julie Stevens)who helps Steed in six of the stories.
Julie Stevens wears a blonde wig in her first two stories, its only when we see her own blonde hair cut short,we seen how young the character of Venus really is,I find her quite endearing, she isn't as glamourous as Cathy but I enjoy her singing, which is always in the episodes she appears in,its not until her last story " A Chorus of Frogs",do we start to see Venus starting to really tell Steed off for his manipulations.
Honor's first filmed story was "Death Dispatch" and she was told after that, not to smile as much and to be icy cool, indeed Cathy unlike the other Avengers ladies, really can give Steed a piece of her mind, which a lot of the time,he deserves!
These early Avengers stories are really good,ok it was video taped, line fluffs are kept in but there is also real atmosphere too,Honor Blackman and Patrick Macnee work great togethor,we also get the bonus of a surviving episode "The Frighteners" from season one too.
Great to have all 26 episodes of season 2,the US release only had the first fourteen episodes for some strange reason.
Give this DVD set,a go,you'll enjoy!

This is incredibly entertaining and the plots a masterpiece of writing. Honor Blackman is a truly remarkable actress and perfect companion for the eternal Steed.

I had never seen Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale. My first Avengers was with the immaculate and sensational Mrs Peel. However, I can fully understand how Mrs Peel came into existence as Honor/Cathy is a truly independent woman and holds her own perfectly in each episode.

The most fascinating thing is the storyline. Those I have seen so far has been a remarkble piece of drama. More like theatre than television. Although these are in black and white and the sound quality not of modern standards, this actually seems to enhance the suspense. Should be purchased without hesitation!

I was dubious about buying the early Avengers, as I knew they were totally different from the quirky and comforting world of Mrs Peel, but there are some great momenst in the early series. Cathy Gale is excellent and her relationship with Steed is very watchable. Some episodes fail miserably, but there are enough good ones to keep you going. IMHO series two is probably the worst surviving Avengers series, worse that the New Avengers, but that's more down to production values, the fact that they were recorded live - and occasionally the scripts - rather than anything to do with the stars, who shine in every scene. Worth buying for the good moments and to help you understand how it all started.

This is series two of 'The Avengers' and the first Honor Blackman episodes. It has now been released in England, But there was a delay to this, maybe because Honer isn't in all of the episodes and only became a 'Regular' in the third series. But it's okay if you like classic stuff or if you are a compleatist, then this is for you. Highly entertaining, but it depends on what you like. As it was filmed live in the studio on videotape there are some mistakes but I found it okay. Also of interest (as an extra) is the Ian Hendry episode 'The Frighteners' from season one.
The other episodes are;
Mr. Teddy Bear *
Propellant *
The Decapod
Bullseye *
Mission To Montreal
The Removal Men
The Mauritius Penny *
Death Of A Great Dane *
The Sell-Out
Death On The Rocks *
Traitor In Zebra *
The Big Thinker *
Death Dispatch *
Dead On Course
Intercrime *
Immortal Clay*
Box Of Tricks
Warlock *
The Golden Eggs *
School For Traitors
The White Dwarf *
Man In The Mirror
Conspiracy Of Silence *
A Chorus Of Frogs
Six Hands Across A Table *
Killer Whale *
Honer Blackman is only in these *
