Excellent book 10 May 2005
By David Griffiths - Published on
Format: Paperback
The "ABC of SEO" is an alphabetic tour through the often obscure world and language of Search Engine Optimization and Marketing. All the important SEO subjects including competition analysis, keywords, links and page ranking algorithms are well and clearly covered. Although the A-Z format sounds dry the book is easy to read from cover to cover. The author provides many interesting anecdotes and asides and has an engaging writing style.

The "ABC of SEO" scores highly by pointing out both good and bad practices and is an ideal read for anyone thinking of hiring an outside optimization firm or who wants to put in place a methodology for a team working on websites. It would also be of great use to any web author or blogger wishing to optimize their own site.

The book does not assume any knowledge about search engine marketing beyond basic concepts of the Web and HTML. An ideal book for anyone wanting to better promote their website.

Broad and Deep 13 Jun. 2006
By I. Code Freeley - Published on
Format: Paperback
This is a surprising book. I bought on the recommendations here and elsewhere, but when I pulled it from the box I was underwhelmed by it's size. As has been implied here, I was guilty of unfairly judging the book by it's cover. Who'd have thought that a tiny little book could have such a high density of high quality material?

I've been surveying the SEO landscape, playing catch-up so to speak, and have bought a number of highly-rated SEO and "make money on Google" books recently. This little book provides a highly-concentrated bundle of insights, and is money well-spent. It's certainly up there with the O'Reilly books in terms of the density of useful information and clarity of thought.

My only negative note (a very, very mild one) is that it's structured, literally, with A-B-C chapters. Consequently, it's not a "sit down and read" book. It's more like an encyclopedia, which actually means it'll be a good reference book later on.

best for (nearly) beginners 29 Mar. 2005

Being French and having set my own website a couple of years ago, I was looking for an "easy of access" book which would not only explain technical terms I'd come across before but also give the practical information you need when you try to develop/optimise your website.

I found David George's book extremely pleasant to read - no convoluted explanations here, it is a practical A to Z of terms used in the business with each time a more or less detailed explanation (depending on the complexity of the relevant term) of the meaning of specific terms as well as very practical examples.

It is a proper practical guide, i.e. you feel that someone is giving you his own method as to how to take such or such a step andhow to avoid pitfalls and overcome hurdles.

The good thing is that you don't have to read it from the first page onwards... but you may end up doing it like I did! If you already have a bit of knowledge (even basic) in the website optimization area, you will be able to easily find your way through this practical book.

I would say that we can all find what we are looking for in that book, the more experienced you are, the more you'll be able to scan it through to look for the most professional/technical tips. If you are not so experienced or need to improve your knowledge you will have pleasure in reading it from cover to cover. Mr George's sense of humour certainly helps the reader not only learn a lot from this book but also entertain him/herself.

I would therefore very happily recommend it.

Very broad area covered, but detailed at the same time 25 July 2006
By Carsten Cumbrowski - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I was a bit skeptic about this book and walked by it multiple times before I bought it. It was one of the newest SEO books available so I thought that it might have something useful about recent changes. Well, that was before "Jagger" and "BigDaddy" which is a different story.

I was positively surprised about the quality and quantity of the topics covered by the book. It explains the various methods (old and current, "White Hat", "Black Hat" and "Gray Hat") and how they work and what they do.

He also provides some technical background written in a very clean and understandable form, for everybody who is not that tech-savvy but interested in the topic SEO.

This book gives you a pretty good idea what SEO is and how to use it, what not to do and why. It is not only for Webmasters and DIY SEO's, but also for eCommerce Managers and VP's that would like to know what their SEO Services are doing.

Although it didn't really teach you how to do SEO on your website. This book will give you general information about SEO. I keep it as a reference book as I am a beginner in this SEO.
