Book Description

28 Feb 2013

Nigel has a disability – an inherited disease that means his nerves don’t tell his muscles what to do – but he does not consider himself disabled. His youngest daughter Ellie has been diagnosed with the same condition. To inspire Ellie, and show her anything is possible, Nigel set himself a list of fifty challenges. This is the story of that list.

Nigel and his wife Lisa have three children and, like all parents, they have always wanted the best for their kids. For Nigel, this meant helping them to understand that life is to be challenged: to be explored and enjoyed, no matter what obstacles you might have to face.

Even during the darkest times, Nigel has never let anything stop him from realising his dreams. To inspire his youngest daughter, and let her see firsthand that anything is possible, Nigel set himself a list of 50 challenges to complete before he turned 50. Some are crazy, wild physical challenges, others are seemingly simple tasks people often take for granted. Some are activities Nigel has done before, others are skills he has learnt to cope with his condition that he wants to share with other people. All of them hold huge emotional significance to Nigel and his family.

This is the heart-warming account of the year Nigel completed The 50 List. Inspiring and surprising, it will move you to tears and laughter, and leave you believing that you really can accomplish anything.

About the Author

Nigel is 49 years old – he turns 50 in December 2012. He has a disability, and is in a wheelchair, but does not consider himself disabled.

Nigel has a muscle wasting condition called Charcot-Marie-Tooth. It’s an inherited disease that means the nerves don’t tell the muscles what to do. The muscles themselves are fine, but they don’t receive signals from the brain, which means they’ll eventually waste away. The deterioration happens in sudden steps, rather than gradually – one day Nigel might be able to use a certain muscle fine, the next day he can’t.

Nigel and his wife Lisa live in Wellingborough with their three children. Their youngest daughter Ellie inherited Charcot-Marie-Tooth. She was diagnosed with the condition when she was five years old.

5.0 out of 5 stars A message delivered 26 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'll admit first that I know Nigel, and would not have considered buying this book otherwise. However, even if you don't know the authour I urge you to buy the book.

It's intelligently written with a delightful, self-effacing, humorous, 'voice'. While it is primarily about the 50 list challenge, there is a good deal about Nigel's life and his condition, which informs the reader and is at times touching. The challenge itself is in no way dealt with in a 'Look at me, look at me, this is what I've done, aren't I great!' kind of way, but tells the story of how these things came about, generousity and support.

All in all an engaging read which I found difficult to put down (simply sitting and read in this house appears a little self-indulgent!)

I have no doubt that the message it was intended to send to his daughter Ellie will be well and truly received.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read and be inspired 8 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A book with lots of laughter and tears. Amazing real life stories and adventures and experiences. Incredibly inspiring. I believe there is at least one sentence in the book that will mean something to someone - will make you think about your life. There was definitely more than one for me.
Yes, I know the author, Nigel, and his family so maybe I had more reason to want to read it. But I didn't expect it to have such an impact on me. I would hope that I am such a hero to my children and that, when they read this book, they have the confidence to achieve what they want to in life.

Read about Nigel's life and the challenges he faces daily then come back here and write your own review....I look forward to reading more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming story. 17 Mar 2013

Nice easy read which tells of the challenges a disabled father sets himself, to show his daughter that anything is possible. When I purchased this book I didn't realise that it was a true and very recent story.

Nigel explains in plain language what it's like to be in a wheelchair and how he deals with it and is passing his tricks and advise on to his daughter. I see why dad's her hero. This is a must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars The 50 List 3 Mar 2014

I wanted to read this book for very personal reasons. The author and his daughter have a genetic muscle condition, as do my father and I. Nigel and Ellie have Charcot Marie Tooth disease (CMT) and dad and I have centronuclear myopathy. The gene that causes our form of CNM is called Dynamin2 (DNM2) and alterations in this gene has also been associated with CMT. Strangely, it turns out that the family are from Northamptonshire, as is my dad. I actually think dad and Nigel would get on quite well and could talk at length about things that travel at high speed in land, in water and in the sky.

The 50 list is a book about a year of challenges that Nigel set himself In order to inspire Ellie, and show her anything is possible. There were 50 challenges as Nigel decided to complete the challenges in his 50th year.

Nigel hoped that the challenges would show Ellie her that life is to be challenged, to be explored and enjoyed, no matter what obstacles you might have to face and he sets out to show her this by his own actions. CMT affects people in different ways and while it is not inevitable that Ellie will end up in a wheelchair like Nigel, the possibility is there, so Nigel sets out to show her that she shouldn't see see it as a dead weight or a nuisance but an object to give her freedom.

The list is varied, some of the challenges are physical such as completing a half marathon, scuba diving, jet skiing, snow skiing, indoor skydiving and accelerating from 0 to 160 mph in eight seconds in a dragster. Others are seemingly more simple tasks such as completing a jigsaw which Nigel finds difficult because of lack of dexterity in his hands.
