Product Description

In any conflict, the First Alternative is my way, and the Second Alternative is your way. The fight always boils down to a question of whose way is better. This book presents a new and practical, but incredibly effective and eye-opening, way to reach resolution through using the 'Third Alternative'. The Third Alternative moves beyond your way or my way to a higher and better way - one that allows both parties to emerge from debate or even heated conflict in a far better place than either had envisioned. With the Third Alternative, nobody has to give up anything, and everyone wins. To a world of escalating strife and contention, Third Alternative thinkers like those Covey profiles in this innovative and practical book, bring creative solutions, peace and healing. Through key examples and stories from his work as a consultant, Covey will demonstrate that Third Alternative thinking is the supreme opportunity of our times. Readers will learn how to create new and better results instead of escalating conflict, as well as how to build strong relationships with diverse individuals based on an attitude of winning together. The Third Alternative represents a departure from material on conflict resolution, negotiation and mediation; the book represents a new way of thinking that will be embraced not only by the many fans that have flocked to Covey's prior books, but also by anyone who is seeking resolution in their professional or personal lives.

No question, this is Stephen Covey's latest and greatest tome. Please read it cover-to-cover, then re-read, finally put it into practice.

I loved the author's 'Teach to Learn' summary at the end of each chapter, encouraging the reader to learn from this book by teaching it to someone else.

Branding the book as 'the supreme opportunity of our time' is no exaggeration. I found practical applications in business, at home, in society - in fact everywhere.

Finally, you might also want to read The Opposable Mind - How Successful Leaders Win Through Integrative Thinking, by Roger Martin, where I first came across 'The 3rd Way' concept.

This is a stunning book that takes your breath away.

whilst it's in fact just a much more in depth analysis (with GREAT examples) of Habits 4,5, and 6 of the 7 Habits, it puts it into a simple, powerful, easy to understand and apply format, and breaks it up into different situations.

If only we could get this taught in every school, workplace, and particularly to the unemployed and disempowered people in our society, our society would be a totally different place.

Buy it, read it, keep reading it, but it for your friends and colleagues and encourage them to do the same.

Looking forward to Sean Covey releasing a version for teenagers!

A Paradigm Shift in the True Sense of the Word! 5 Oct 2011
By Terry Lyon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Anyone who has read the 7 Habits will know this is not just a reiteration of Habit 6. This book really hits the heart of Win-Win and shows so profoundly what a real win-win is all about and how you can come up with a solution that is greater than you could have ever imagined. It is not simple to achieve synergy, but this book shows such great examples of how it has been reached.

This is a must read for everyone! World leaders, politicians, business leaders, companies of all sizes, universities, colleges, schools, hospitals, county, city, state and federal agencies, husbands, wives, teenagers all can gain valuable insight from this remarkable book.

Not much new; mostly examples 13 Oct 2011
By Peppypilot - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I have always been a Covey fan and have used his 7 Habits extensively. In that book, he packaged some great concepts together very well and made them very concrete and usable.

Frankly, I was disappointed with this book. I did not really see anything new - just a re-packaging of 7 Habits' concepts and lots of examples: Think win-win; reach out to the other guy to really listen; synergize.

Also, maybe I have changed, but I now find his tone heavy-handed and "teachy."

I really had hoped for something new and fresh - but I didn't find it.

Worthwhile But Not Ground Breaking 29 Oct 2011
By Book Fanatic - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book by Stephen Covey is not earth shattering or particularly innovative. There is nothing really "new" here. However, having said that the book does do an excellent job at 1) Explaining his thesis and 2) Showing how it works in the real world.

Covey is correct in what he says and he says it very well. I think there is tremendous value in the chapter that explains the 3rd Alternative (through page 85). What follows are fairly long chapters that describe real world examples of 3rd Alternative thinking at Work, Home, School, the Legal System, Society, and the World respectively. I was not that interested in some of those chapters and others I found quite useful.

So if you are involved in conflict in any of those areas, I do think this book would be very useful. I skimmed some chapters because I wasn't interested and frankly he is saying the same things and after a while you get it. It's too long for the general reader but if you are having problems in even one of those areas it's worth the price of the book.
