Review

"…a great starting point for those readers who want to learn the IMS and explore it further." (E–STREAMS, September 2005)

Product Description

Third edition of this best–selling guide to IMS: fully revised, and updated with brand new material

The IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is the technology that merges the Internet with the cellular world. It makes Internet technologies such as the web, email, instant messaging, presence, and videoconferencing available nearly everywhere at any time.

The third edition of this bestselling book is fully updated and provides comprehensively expanded content, including new chapters on emergency calls and on Voice Call Continuity (VCC). As well as this, The 3G IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) presents updated material including a comprehensive picture of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as well as its applicability to IMS. As most of the protocols have been designed in the IETF, this book explains how the IETF developed these protocols and describes how these protocols are used in the IMS architecture.

This is an indispensable guide for engineers, programmers, business managers, marketing representatives and technically aware users who want to understand how the IMS works and explore the business model behind it.

  • New chapters on emergency calls, Voice Call Continuity (VCC), service configuration (XCAP, XDM), and conferencing
  • Fully updated throughout, including Policy and Charging Control (PCC), QoS, Presence, Instant Messaging, Multimedia Telephony Services, and Push–to–talk over Cellular (PoC)
  • Describes the IP Multimedia Subsystem from two different perspectives: from the IETF perspective, and from the 3GPP perspective.
  • Provides details on the latest policy technology and security architecture
  • Written by experienced professionals in the field.

Readers of the book "The 3G IP Multimedia Subsystem" by Gonzalo Camarillo and Miguel A. Garcia Martin will be pleasantly surprised to find not only a well documented description of the state of the art 3rd generation (3G) mobile networks but also a very up to date tutorial of SIP based IP multimedia communications used in these networks. The book is thus perfectly suited for all professionals in IP services and networks, as well as for professional in more traditional networks. The book is an excellent refresher on IP multimedia and newer services such as Presence services and security that are well documented, from that basic concept to more detailed call flows.
Internet oriented readers will also get acquainted with holdovers from the circuit switched world that are still in use in 3G networks, such as the notion of the Signaling Plane (Section II) in the IMS and the Media Plane in the IMS (section III) and several other 3G concepts that differ from the Internet practices.

The authors have thus done a through job of representing the convergence of two worlds: 3G mobile networks and the Internet.

A must have for IMS 11 July 2007
Format:Hardcover
Possibly the best technical book I've ever read.

I work with IMS technology and we use the book in our department to introduce IMS to newcomers. But I also work in European projects on IMS and the book is the main reference for most of the other teams involved.

You just need this book and the 3GPP specifications for anything you want to do with IMS.

A mixed bag 22 Aug 2006
By Thanos Kosmidis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book intends to be the de facto handbook for IMS, but it ends up being mostly reference material.

While it has some fairly detailed descriptions of the standards and protocols involved, it does not go beyond the specifications already publicly available, or the methods that some vendors already use. Some chapters read like a translation of technical drafts, while others concerning less defined areas are very high level.

The authors, while doing a good job assembling useful information, probably set out to write this book too early, when IMS was still only a reference framework, without widespread service provider adoption. Furthermore, the corresponding expertise across the industry is missing, thus making this a less elaborate view on the services that IMS would provide, compared to what the book's subtitle would suggest.

If you need a book on IMS right now, and are not happy with the abundance of online materials, buy this book. If you are looking for a comprehensive guide on what IMS means for providers and customers, I personally have not read such a book yet - but even if it has not been released, it is only a matter of time. Keep your eyes peeled for snippets of information coming out of service providers and infrastructure vendors, and for the ongoing debates in the industry around the evolution of the service delivery platform.

Great book for those needing to know about IMS 4 Jan 2005
By Sean K. Schneyer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
My original review of this book was based on the 1st edition which contains some typos which could make it a bit hard to read.

I am now revising this review to reflect the 2nd addition that is now available. The editors did a much better job on this edition and there is plenty of new content to make it worth the purchase.

This is a great book to acquaint the user with IMS, its history and how it fits into the Internet landscape. The authors have done a good job of covering the entire IMS space.

This is a must have book for anyone needing to get up-to-speed on IMS.

For anyone who will be working with IMS regularly, they will want to also familiarize themselves with the 3GPP specifications ([...]) since IMS is still a developing technology. There are already a number of changes to IMS that are not documented in the 2nd edition since the specifications are still being worked on.

Not only do I highly recommend this book, but we often give this book to our customers when talking to them about IMS.

Great Reference Book 21 Oct 2004
By Mehul Shah - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
If there is one book you have to buy for IMS, make it this one. The authors clearly explain the benefits of this new Multimedia domain and then go on to describe the architecture in no-nonsense, easy to understand terms. A basic understanding of 3GPP network architecture and the SIP protocol are required pre-requisites. An Extensive reference section will allow the user to dig deeper in any topic of their choosing. A must have reference book!!
